YesAsia Editorial Description

Dragon Ma (Jackie Chan) returns in Project A II, the spectacular follow-up to the blockbuster Project A! Dragon Ma is assigned to a corrupt police precinct, and brings a squad of righteous officers with him to clean up the territory. But the influence of corrupt Superintendent Chun (Lin Wei) runs deep, and some of the pirates who threatened Ma in Project A are back looking for revenge. What does all this mean? It means numerous opportunities for chases, double-crosses, and the inevitable Jackie Chan fight sequences, which are presented with Chan's trademark flair and prop-filled panache! An all star cast, including Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau, Rosamund Kwan, Ray Lui, and Ricky Hui, are on hand to back up Jackie Chan, but it's Chan who holds center stage with his patented comic charm and death-defying stunts. Creative stuntwork and clever direction make Project A II a faster, tougher, and more creative film than Project A, and this is even without the presence of Sammo Hung or Yuen Biao! For old-time Jackie Chan cinema magic, Project A II is a hard film to beat!

Professional Review of "Project A II (Taiwan version)"

November 8, 2005

Starting with a helpful recap of events from Project A, Project A II picks up the story of turn-of-the-century Coast Guard member, Dragon Ma (Jackie Chan), minutes after the first movie ends. The remnants of the pirates blown up at the end of Project A wash up onshore and vow vengeance on Dragon Ma - vengeance with their hatchets! Meanwhile, although they looked to be lost at sea at the end of the first movie, Dragon and crew have made it back to Hong Kong and he's kept on the police force, sent to take over the corrupt Sai Wan district run by even-more-corrupt cop, Chun (David Lam).

Jackie Chan is at his inventive best in this period film. At the peak of his career he was given the time and money he needed to make some of the world's greatest action and comic setpieces, and Project A II has plenty of both. Take the now-classic bedroom scene. Two hitmen sent by the Dowager Empress take revolutionary (Rosamund Kwan) back to her cousin's apartment to search for a book of names. Her cousin (Maggie Cheung) returns and the hitmen hide in her closet with Kwan held at gunpoint. Suddenly Jackie Chan, freshly-framed and arrested, shows up for a visit, hiding his police escort from Maggie. Jackie's boss (Bill Tung) shows up, and Jackie hides from him. Finally, Chun shows up and Bill Tung, now handcuffed to a couch, hides from him. Three sets of people, three rooms, all of them hiding from one another while handcuffed to various objects (Jackie to his escort, Bill Tung to a sofa). The scheming breaks down and the players are revealed to one another. Choreographed as intricately as a minuet, this scene took ten days to plan and four weeks to shoot, the kind of freedom that only a star of Jackie Chan's calibre can command. Fortunately, he's talented enough to put the time and money bought by stardom to good use.

The action is equally impressive with high-impact fights peppered throughout the movie, building up to the final scene with revolutionaries fighting Imperial hitmen, pirates fighting corrupt cops, and Jackie Chan fighting everybody else. The scene ends with a cornered Jackie stuffing his mouth full of real (yes, real) hot peppers to turn his spit into homemade mace.

The strongest drug on the planet is watching Jackie Chan when he's inspired, and Project A II maintains a near-impossible level of inspiration from start to finish.

If you haven't seen the first Project A, don't worry about it. Project A II is the perfect place to start your worship of Jackie Chan.

Great movie! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Jackie does it again with this sequel to his 1983 masterpiece Project A. The stunts are truly amazing with wonderfully choreographed fight scenes (as we expect), but we do miss Samo Hung and Yuen Biao from the cast as they make an unbeatable team. A must have for any Jackie Chan fan.
