Adapted from the seminal novel by Nobel laureate Mo Yan that also inspired Zhang Yimou's 1987 film, drama epic Red Sorghum features Zhou Xun in her first television role in a decade. The series, directed by the much-lauded Zheng Xiaolong (Empresses in the Palace), tells the story of Jiu Er (Zhou Xun), whom at the age of 19 is sold by her father to be the wife of the leprotic son of a liquor seller. During her journey to her new home, Jiu Er is nearly kidnapped by a bandit, but is rescued by the brash Yu Zhan Ao (Zhu Yawen, My Natasha). The two embark on an illicit love affair, and together, they must contend with one hardship after another, including the Japanese invasion of their homeland.

1930年代，山東高密地區土匪橫行。

戴老三因起了貪念，擅作主張將家中十九歲的女兒戴九蓮（九兒，周迅 飾演）許配給患有痲瘋病的酒坊主人兒子單扁郎，換回一頭驢子。在迎娶當日，抬轎的槓子班領頭余占鰲（朱亞文 飾演）起鬨「顛轎」整新娘九兒。

村中土匪花脖子看上九兒，於是下手將九兒擄走，余占鰲挺身而出救了九兒，九兒對此人的勇氣萌生好感。數日後，九兒回家途中，遇到當時救了自己的余占鰲。

原來余占鰲初見九兒即喜歡九兒，於是兩人情不自禁在高粱地中野合。其後，為了將九兒據為己有，余占鰲殺害了單家父子，並與九兒攜手展開了一段不被世人認可的愛情……。
