Based on the manga by Otsuka Tomii and the subsequent animated series by Takayama Fumihiko, Rescue Wings lends a twist to the usual rescue genre stories with the experiences of a female rescue helicopter pilot. Made with the assistance of Japan's Self-Defense Forces, the film is an exciting look at helicopter pilots who risk their lives everyday to save others. Newcomer Takayama Yuko, whose father was a Self-Defense Force rescue medic before he passed away during a rescue mission, stars as the young female pilot who learns to overcome her professional and personal struggles. Directed by Tezuka Masaaki (Sengoku Jieitai 1549), the film also stars Watanabe Dai (Crows Zero), Nakamura Masatoshi (Love Letters at Sixty), Kimura Yoshino (Sukiyaki Western Django), and Miura Tomokazu (Always).

Kawashima Haruka (Takayama Yuko) has just become the first helicopter pilot of the air rescue unit after admiring the profession all her life. However, the job is dangerous, often involving trips to choppy waters and heavy gusts. Haruka not only has to face the dangers everyday, she also has to get over the fact that sometimes she just can't save everyone. Over time, she learns to overcome the difficulties of her job and becomes an outstanding pilot.

Haruka Kawashima has just started off her career as the first female pilot of the rescue helicopter UH-60J which she had admired since the Air Self-Defense Force (SDF) Rescue Squad saved her mother’s life. The rescue missions require severe training, allowing no space for emotion. They are requested out in the angry waters with high waves, at bold cliffs lashed by gusts and on isolated islands with heavy winds. Haruka struggles to overcome the pain of not being able to save all lives and nurture the heart and pride of a rescue helicopter pilot. That is when a fighter jet F-15J drops off the radar. Haruka and her squad rushes to the rescue of the pilot while fighting against time as they reach the fuel limit, yet engage in a life-or-death mission...
