YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Huang Jia Jun proves there are miracles around us with the documentary Rock Me To The Moon, which follows the journey of six fathers who all have children with rare diseases. Featuring a band of six average-looking middle-aged men who find hope in music jamming and some occasional out-of-tune singing, Rock Me To The Moon is a highly appealing film and one of the most emotionally straining documentaries of 2013. Making their debut at an outdoor music festival in Taiwan, the amateur rock band puts aside life's sufferings for a brief moment by belting out unconditional fatherly love for their children. Rock Me To The Moon received the audience award at last year's Taipei Film Festival and Best Original Film Song at 2013's Golden Horse Awards.

Six music novices from different walks of life come together in the name of music and the one thing that they treasure most in life: their children, all of whom suffer from rare diseases. Making their debut at the popular Ho-Hai-Yan Gongliao Rock Festival, the selfless fathers do not look for fame but only some comfort amid life's hardships through the healing powers of music.

An ode to parental love and the healing power of music, director Huang Chia-chun's heartfelt documentary charts the unlikely formation of Sleepy Dads, an amateur band made up of six middle-aged men who all have children that are disabled by rare diseases. While these would-be rockers come from a diversity of career backgrounds – from high school English teacher and social activist to church administrator and taxi driver – they're tightly bound by a common desire to transcend the domestic torment and live their lives to the fullest. Can these selfless fathers – many of whom total beginners in band performance – pick up their new instruments in time to rock the stage of the popular Ho-Hai-Yan Gongliao Rock Festival?

Finding comfort in rock
If parenting is tough, then imagine the pressure for parents of kids with rare genetic diseases like those in Huang Jia Jun's Rock Me to the Moon. The film traces the journey of several parents in a support group who decide to form a band as they go from the studio to the concert stage. Produced by Jump! Ashin director Lin Yu Hsien, Rock Me to the Moon is a great story of six underdogs who found comfort in music and in each other.

The band, named "Sleepy Dads" due to the fathers' lack of sleep from tending to their children, started out as a weekly activity for six fathers in the support group. Merely amateurs from vastly different backgrounds looking for a new hobby, the Sleepy Dads are encouraged by their music mentor to apply for a performance at the Ho-hai-yan Rock Festival. With a goal to strive for, the Sleepy Dads begin a long journey filled with real-life obstacles.

Originally planned as a documentary about the fathers and their relationships with their kids, Rock Me to the Moon was shot over the course of five years (though the film's on-screen text says the story unfolds over the course of one year). The extended production period allows Huang to capture plenty of insight about both the band and eachthe member's' relationships with their children.

Anyone looking for a music documentary may be disappointed by Rock Me to the Moon. Huang is understandably more interested in how the fathers deal with their children's diseases, which includes genetic disorders like Prader-–Willi syndrome and tuberous sclerosis, as well as Glanzmann's thrombasthenia and lissencephaly. The film is often heartbreaking for showing the crippling effects these diseases have on children (one charactersubject says that many parents end up abandoning their children or committing suicide because of the stress), but it's also inspiring for showing the characterfathers' endless devotion to caring for their children.

Like a good dramatic narrative, Huang's biggest success is in building very sympathetic characters and showing them in very difficult situations, from their children's health problems to their attempts to enter the music festival. Rock Mme to the Moon runs a little too long at 115 minutes, but it's also a very touching film that knows how to get an audience invested into its story. We don't root for the Sleepy Dads to be able to perform at the festival because they're particularly talented in their craft. We root for them because we all want these fathers to finally experience a moment of joy in a life filled with difficulties. In the end, whether the dads will win any acclaim for their music doesn't matter (though the song in the film did win a Golden Horse Award). What matters is that these fathers can find comfort and camaraderie in their band experience. We, in turn, find comfort in knowing that the Sleepy Dads are still out there rocking.
