After being on hiatus for all of 2017 for health reasons, Aoi Eir returns this year with her signature clear-voiced rock-flavored pop in her 14th double A-side single of Yakusoku and Ryuusei.
Yakusoku ("Promise") was unveiled online in February to announce her return. Aoi co-wrote the soaring medium-tempo ballad with frequent collaborator Shigenaga Ryosuke, who also composed and arranged. From the first line, one can already tell that she poured her feelings during hiatus into the lyrics: "In the normalcy of daily life / I suddenly realized that I was singing." Aoi directs the song's simple and sincere message of longing and gratitude to the fans who waited for her and gave her strength to step back out. While Aoi's voice is as strong and ringing as ever, there is also a gentle intimacy to the song's uplifting melody and underlying piano and strings that matches the lyrics.
The single's other title song Ryuusei ("Shooting Star") is the opening theme for Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online, continuing Aoi's collaboration with the SAO franchise after Niji no Oto, Innocence and Ignite. In accordance with its adventure anime theme roots, the song explodes with fiery energy from beginning to end. Ryuusei dashes forward with an unbridled tempo and dense rock beats that build to a blood-rushing chorus.
Ryuusei's stirring lyrics, again written by Aoi and Shigenaga, correspond with the anime's heroine, a shy girl who feels insecure and lacking until she discovers a new world and identity in a VR game. The song's story begins poignantly with heartbreaking vulnerability – "Always painfully comparing myself to others / While counting the things I lacked, the tears fell" – and then blasts ahead with soul-searching resolve. For the song's final line – "I decided to never avert my eyes on the darkest night" – the music suddenly and effectively drops out, leaving only Aoi's powerful voice to cut through "the darkest night." Out of all of Aoi's SAO themes, this is my favorite yet.
