YesAsia Editorial Description

Secret has been on a streak with their singles Magic and Madonna, and they're starting off 2011 with another surefire hit. Taking a break from their sexy image, the group go with a sweet, retro concept for their new single Shy Boy. Composed by Kang Ji Won, the catchy song gets your toes tapping with swing music. Hip-hop musician Marco wrote the single album's second track No. 1, which mixes powerful beats and intense lyrics.

시크릿 싱글앨범 - 샤이보이

01. 샤이보이
02. No.1
03. 샤이보이(Instrumental)
04. No. 1(Instrumental)

Secret’s Showgirl groove thang! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Well, considering ‘secrets’ and girl band contract issues lately, (DeSParodos v The Magnificent Five (or three!) 2011 in Kara’s ‘spaghetti western’ type present case (sorry to hear about this, girls), its best to avoid getting your brains in a confusing fizz about such ‘foggy’ media goings on; (brings to mind Fad Gadget’s ‘Life on the Line’ lyrics. Pens, dotted lines and music contracts…deary me) and chill out to some music like Secret’s “Shy Boy” here. I think the wisest words came from some of Kara’s songwriters and calibrators; to refrain from negativity and just patiently wait and give Kara your love. They’ll be back like 5 little terminators - patience, children, patience!

Anyways, getting on tracks (although two members of Secret filled in for Gyuri’s radio show), I recently received Secrets latest new single here “Shy Boy”, which I found to be a really nice pleasant breath of fresh air. Along with After School’s “Happy Pledis” 60’s style Mowtown sounding “Love Love Love”, these two songs quite complement each other as such. Secret’s “Shy Boy” has an uplifting 50’s era style rock n roll beat, although with a more variety showgirls swing-jazz sound and of course the electronic layers of sound. Bright vocals from the girls, too! Definitely a highly ‘insanely catchy’ song! Quite a lot of layered sound here, too; some of the guitar sound at the finish I found surprising (almost a bit Pink Floyd). Second song “No 1” returns to the more familiar hip-hop style of modern K-pop dance, but the overall electronica was good. It does feature some auto-tune as if Zingers’ voice as been through Little Boot’s Stylophone, but I really liked the swaths of synth and bass beats to this though ^^. Quite sc-fi. The Secret girls look very upbeat as sexy showgirls, too (not looking very shy, though **blush**). Packaging is a record sleeve type outer card with the CD housed on a separate printed card inside (still not to sure about those white foam CD holders, though). Included also is a fold out poster with lyrics and info and pictures of Secret similar to the outer cover. Still haven’t got around to hearing the previous Secret CDs yet (shame on me, yes?), but this is a nice ‘get you out of the doldrums’ song. What joyful music is all about, really!

Secret Time Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Secret is one of those groups that constantly release fun, upbeat and insanely catchy songs every single comeback. “Shy Boy” continues this trend in a unique and fresh way with a concept I’ve never seen in K-Pop before. I won’t lie to you, when I saw the concept photos and music video teaser for this song… I was worried, to say the least. My reaction when I heard the full song? I was clicking that replay button like it was my job. The typical Secret style introduction worked really here and flowed nicely into JiEun’s singing. The rest of the song does a great job of maintaining that 60’s feeling without sounding too dated, which is always a plus. My favorite part would have to be Zinger’s unexpected rap break near the end; it flowed surprisingly well.

While “No. 1” is a really good song, it completely throws the 60’s concept out the window. It would have been interesting to see them continue that feeling into another catchy song. I don’t know why they used so much auto-tune with this one, Secret is the last group that needs it. I think the one reason this wasn’t picked as the promotional single is because “Shy Boy” had a marketable concept, while this would have been considered normal and boring. Anyway, I really like this. It’s not a typical Secret song, but it worked for them. As always, Zinger’s rap was really nice.

Overall: 8.4/10
