YesAsia Editorial Description
Zhang Yimou returns to the martial arts genre in the staggeringly beautiful period epic Shadow which premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival. Winner of four prizes including Best Director at the 55th Golden Horse Film Awards, the slow-burning saga is a stately dissection of political intrigue and power struggle between a general, his shadow and his king. Lensed by Zhang regular Zhao Xiaoding, Shadow is presented in near monochromatic photography evocative of a traditional ink wash painting and features award-winning costume and production design by Horace Ma and Chen Minzheng. Deng Chao (Mermaid) takes on dual roles opposite wife Sun Li (Mural) in the Three Kingdoms era epic, which also co-stars Zheng Kai (The Great Wall), Guan Xiaotong (The Promise), Hu Jun (As the Light Goes Out), Wu Lei (Asura), Wang Qianyuan (Peace Breaker) and Wang Jingchun (So Long, My Son).
Trouble brews in the Kingdom of Pei after an enemy state occupies contested territory. Aggressive military commander Zi Yu (Deng Chao) and King Pei Liang (Zheng Kai) disagree over war and diplomacy, leading to a tense showdown in the royal court. Unbeknownst to Pei Liang, Zi Yu is in critical condition and has deployed doppelganger Jing Zhou to pose as him. Trained for years to be Zi Yu's "shadow," Jing Zhou is suddenly thrust into the conspiracy and Machiavellian powerplay of his master and the King.

Product Information
Director Zhang Yimou's reimagining of the classic Three Kingdoms - Jingzhou epic, the action/drama SHADOW tells the story of a powerful King and his people who have been displaced from their homeland and long to win it back. The King is wild and ambitious, but his motives and methods are mysterious. His great general is a visionary who longs for nothing more than to win the ultimate battle, but needs to lay his plans in secret. The women of the palace are tragic figures, caught between being revered as goddesses and treated as mere pawns. And then there is the commoner, the "everyman" around whom the inexorable forces of history swirl, always ready to swallow him up.

Just a shadow of the golden flower's curse
Just a shadow of the golden flower's curse
When viewing director Zhang Yimou's film 'Shadow' one can't help comparing it to Zhang's 'Curse of the Golden Flower'. Both tell complex stories of palace intrigue, unfolded in Shakesperean fashion. Both climax in epic battles.
While the similarities between the films are obvious, their differences are stark. Visually, 'Curse of the Golden Flower' is a gorgeous explosion of vivid color, a never-ending treat for the eye. 'Shadow', on the other hand, has been blanched of almost all color, presenting a grim, near-black-and-white landscape in which the rain never ceases. More significantly, 'Curse' focused on the interior lives and motives of its protagonists; it provided a rich human story. 'Shadow', by contrast, tells a chilly tale of political skullduggery in which interior lives are largely unexplored. The lack of concern with interior lives in 'Shadow' is reflected in the following line from the film: "There is no right or wrong when it comes to life matters." Really?!? Beyond the contrasts, 'Shadow' interrupts its endless scheming with head-scratchingly peculiar scenes. For example, Betty Sun, playing the wife of 'the Commander', who has shown no aptitude, interest, or abilities in the martial arts, suddenly conceives a fighting strategy which proves to be decisive. Bizarre weaponry, which seems startlingly ahistorical, appears out of the blue. The film's central character is stabbed time after time after time like a human pin-cushion, yet shrugs it off and keeps on going. Well, he does walk with a limp, but the numerous piercings of chest, back, and arms seem to have little effect. Because the chilly story-telling in 'Shadow' is so emotionally unengaging, these peculiarities make it difficult for the viewer to continue to give the film the benefit of the doubt. Let me provide one more contrast between 'Curse of the Golden Flower' and 'Shadow': I'm looking forward to watching 'Curse' again and again, but have no interest in spending any more time in the bleak world of 'Shadow'. |

Nice-looking
If your expecting anything like "Hero" or "House of flying daggers", it won't be found in "Shadow". The complicated political story didn't engage me. I found the plot to be slow-paced and did get bored watching the film.
The only good I can say about the film is that it is beautiful looking and the performances are very good. The action scenes are O.K but nothing special (and not long enough). It has good finale but takes a while to get there. |
