YesAsia Editorial Description

The odd couple of Sammo Hung (Pedicab Driver) and Karl Maka (Aces Go Places) team up in Skinny Tiger and Fatty Dragon, a buddy cop action-comedy directed by Lau Ka Wing. Sammo Hung and Karl Maka play two mismatched partners on the trail of a drug kingpin. But when the overzealous police action of the pair upsets their chief, they're sent packing on a forced vacation. The two manage to find relaxation and new purpose as a result of their time off, but they're not out of action for long! Their return to the force comes with an attempt on their lives, which leads the pair to take action against the bad guys with all the righteous fury and hilarious hijinks that the Skinny Tiger and Fatty Dragon can muster! The winning chemistry between Sammo Hung and Karl Maka highlights Skinny Tiger and Fatty Dragon, an entertaining action-comedy that features all the surprising action sequences that one would expect from a film starring Sammo Hung!

Professional Review of "Skinny Tiger and Fatty Dragon (Blu-ray + DVD) (HD Mastered Version) (Japan Version)"

October 16, 2006

This professional review refers to Skinny Tiger & Fatty Dragon
A blast from the past, this "cop-buddies" movie follows legendary Cinema City founder, Karl Maka, and legendary martial arts choreographer, Sammo Hung, as they team up to bring down a gang of smugglers led by the younger brother of legendary Shaw Brothers director Lau Kar-leung, Lau Kar-wing (who also directed the movie). Although it was a Golden Princess release, the movie reunited these three men who had formed the Gar Bo Production Company that produced several kung-fu comedies in the 1980s.

The movie plays like a time capsule from the Cinema City era of Hong Kong comedies: there's a car chase, martial arts (good ones), comely young ladies being lusted after, and a comic duo who bring down the bad guys. Time's passage is represented by Karl Maka's wrinkles (his bald head has never looked so fragile), Sammo Hung's heft (he's doubled extensively for flips, falls, rolls and spinning kicks), and the impact of the action (it's a little less comic and a little more tooth-shattering than it used to be). Other than that, the gags are still the same, which can be refreshing.

Karl Maka is the chatty cop, squawking along in his shrill, abrasive voice while Sammo Hung is the heavy, unleashing his patented Bruce Lee imitation on gangs of jewel thieves and cross-dressing criminals alike. Carrie Ng plays a female crook who initially sues Maka and Hung for harassment before she gets on the wrong side of her criminal co-conspirators and has to enlist their protection. Lau Kar-wing directs, and shows up at the end as a sniveling gang boss who, when push comes to more pushing, blossoms into a martial arts master capable of whipping face with his pointy loafers.

There's a great Carrie Ng versus a team of cross-dressing hitmen with hooks scene, and Maka gets to cut loose on the gweilo talent, while Sammo's Bruce Lee act is always impressively bizarre to watch.

For all its charms, and it has plenty, Skinny Tiger & Fatty Dragon didn't do so well at the box office. It was old-school comedy, but a new wind was already blowing it all away. 1990 was the year Stephen Chow broke. He was already a popular comedian, and in 1990 he released 11 movies, four of them during the summer (when Skinny Tiger was released), and seven of them made more money, including two which broke the $40 million barrier (the average movie was taking in between $10 and $15 million). Audiences were flocking to Chow's mo lei tau (nonsense) style of comedy, and in the face of a tidal wave like that, the low-key retro charms of Skinny Tiger & Fatty Dragon were completely washed out.

Fat & Skinny Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
What a combo. I absolutely love it and especially Karl Maka's "sing-song" delivery of dialogue. Plenty of slapstick comedy (but not stale). Simple story of 2 cops having to track and infiltrate a heroine dealer (Lau Kar Wing) organization. What followed were mayhem, plenty of action, car chase and great finale. One of the oldies but goodies.

Sammo's buddy cop movie Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I guess action stars had to participate in a buddy-cop movie & this was Sammo's. Nothing spectacular plot wise but the usual, nicely executed good cop/bad cop antic confirms the closeness of Sammo Hung & Karl Mak's characters. Lau Ka Wing provides a formidable villain at the end; so of course the square off between him & Sammo delivers the goods to the audience. I suppose this DVD is worth it's price & enjoyable for how dated the film is. Subtitles & film quatlity are adequately clear.
