Co-starring acclaimed Chinese thespians Vivian Wu, Jiang Wu, and Hollywood star Hugh Jackman, the US-China co-production is a fascinatingly subtle and emotionally charged tale of the special bond between two Chinese girls and the unique language they use to communicate with each other.

In 19th century China, girls had their feet bound and lived a life secluded from the outside world. Two such girls in a remote small county, Snow Flower (Jeon) and Lily (Li) grow up together as laotongs (girls of the same age matched up for their similar temperament, who are sworn to a lifelong friendship) according to the traditional folk custom. Exchanging messages written on folded fans in the secret code of nushu (or "women's writing"), the two girls develop an intimate and seemingly unshakeable relationship that eventually comes under severe test when destiny takes them down different paths of life...

In contemporary Shanghai, Nina (also played by Li) is reunited with her long-separated laotong Sophia (Jeon again) when the latter is hospitalized in a coma following a car accident. As they have fallen out with each other for many years, the key to their reconciliation lies in the story of their ancestors - Snow Flower and Lily - hidden in their secret messages...
