Great film of yakuza life
Great film of yakuza life
"Sonatine" is an unusually good gangster film. Takeshi Kitano seems to have a deep understanding of both the absurdity and the deadly seriousness of yakuza life. In this, "Sonatine" bears some similarity to Juzo Itami's "Minbo". However, "Minbo" is a very angry comic film, reflecting Itami's hatred of the yakuza; it depicts the yakuza as thuggish boobs. Kitano's vision is less judgmental and is framed in scenes of startling beauty.
Kitano plays a yakuza leader named Murakawa. He and his gang are sent to Okinawa to defend the interests of his gang's affiliate there. They end up becoming enmeshed in a violent gang war, with more at stake for Murakawa personally than he originally had suspected. This description of the story, while accurate, is also a bit misleading. Much of the film is spent showing the Murakawa's gang holed up in a house on a remote Okinawan beach waiting for something to happen. We see the gangsters engage in children's games to pass the time. It leads to several hilarious scenes and features cinematography of exceptional beauty. Kitano also makes effective use of Okinawan folk music to underline the strangeness of the setting. The ending of "Sonatine" has left many people scratching their heads in wonder. I believe that Kitano gives us two clues to help us understand the ending. First, recall the image we see at the film's opening, an image of a speared fish. Second, recall that Murakawa speaks of how tired he is. Keep those thoughts in mind when you watch the end of this film. For its abrupt violence and brief nudity, "Sonatine" is not suitable for kids, but I can recommend it wholeheartedly for a mature audience. This is a terrific film! |
