YesAsia Editorial Description

A decade after the thrilling original, actioner SPL gets a spiritual sequel in the adrenaline-fueled SPL 2: A Time For Consequences! Featuring a brand new storyline, the box office hit stars Tony Jaa (Ong Bak), Zhang Jin (Rise of the Legend), Louis Koo (Overheard), and the original film's Wu Jing and Simon Yam in new roles.

Hoping to get to Hung (Louis Koo), the kingpin of a crime syndicate, Hong Kong police detective Kit (Wu Jing) goes undercover and infiltrates the organization. Unfortunately, Kit's cover is soon blown, and he disappears without a trace, only to turn up in a Thai prison. There, he meets prison guard Chatchai (Tony Jaa) and discovers that he is a bone marrow match for Chatchai's leukemia-afflicted daughter. The two men develop a symbiotic relationship, with Chatchai vowing to protect Kit. This proves to be easier said than done; not only is the chief warden (Zhang Jin) determined to kill Kit, an ailing Hung also inexplicably turns up at the prison for a heart transplant, hinting at a large conspiracy.

Professional Review of "SPL 2: A Time For Consequences (2015) (DVD) (Malaysia Version)"

October 29, 2015

This professional review refers to SPL 2: A Time For Consequences (2015) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
Wilson Yip's SPL (aka Sha Po Lang, or Kill Zone as it was rather unimaginatively titled in the west) turned a lot of heads when it originally landed back in 2005, giving fight fans the kind of brutal intensity that had been missing from the Hong Kong thriller genre for years. Its success meant that a sequel was always going to be on the cards, and so it's a bit of a surprise that SPL 2: A Time for Consequences has taken ten years to arrive, with other films like The Raid having long since captured the action crown. The film similarly faced an uphill struggle to impress given the absence of headline stars Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung, though director Soi Cheang (Monkey King) does have as good a replacement as possible in the form of Thai martial arts favourite Tony Jaa (Ong Bak), working hard to take his career to the next level and who joins a returning Wu Jing and Simon Yam in new roles.

A sequel in name only, A Time for Consequences has nothing to do with the original SPL, and this time focuses on a gang of particularly ruthless organ smugglers, headed up by Hung (Louis Koo), who is unfortunately dying of a heart condition, his own brother (Jun Kung) being the only suitable candidate for a transplant. Putting survival before family values, Hung decides to kidnap his younger sibling, though the snatch and grab goes wrong and turns into a bloody shootout with the police, which exposes long-suffering undercover drug addict officer Kit (Wu Jing). Whisked away by Hung’s men, Kit is stashed in a grim Thai prison under the eye of chief warden and Hung henchman Ko Chun (Zhang Jin), where he meets Chai (Tony Jaa), a guard desperate to save his young daughter who is suffering from leukaemia. As it turns out, Kit is the only one with the bone marrow needed to help the girl, and the two men form a bond while his superior and uncle Wah (Simon Yam) tries to track him down.

Given the truancy of Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung and its totally unrelated plot, it’s obviously debatable whether or not A Time for Consequences really needs to be tagged as the sequel to SPL, a fact which doesn't really do it too many favours. Certainly, Soi Cheang's offering has far more in common with The Raid and in particular The Raid 2 in terms of its scope and action beats, though thankfully it does manage to stand on its own two feet. There's definitely a lot more going on here than in the average genre flick, and while some viewers will be put off by its overreliance on coincidence and vague notions of fate, the film does win points for its well-structured plot and reasonably developed characters. Though still disposable and prone to flights of misplaced grandeur set to classical music, the film generally grips through to the end, and benefits from a gritty edge reminiscent of Soi's hard-boiled Dog Bite Dog. Also impressive is the way in which the script ventures into some moral grey areas, and as with the original SPL even its villains are somewhat sympathetic, albeit in a macho, angst-ridden kind of way.

Of course the action is the main draw here and the score on which A Time for Consequences is most likely to be judged, and so it's no small relief that Soi and veteran choreographer Li Ching Chi (The White Storm) combine their talents well to produce some excellent set pieces. Though there's nothing here as memorable as Donnie Yen and Wu Jing's alleyway duel in SPL and nothing to challenge The Raid, the film more than holds its own against the vast majority of other productions, with plenty of creative and suitably bone-crunching brawls. Tony Jaa, Wu Jing and Zhang Jin all live up to expectations, having multiple chances to show off their skills, and the film at times has an old school martial arts feel, with the kind of real enthusiasm for the form not often seen of late in the HK genre. Arguably one of the best action film makers working in China at the moment, Soi pulls everything together with assurance, and keeps the film pounding along at a fast pace despite a long running time, and after a slight lapse around the halfway mark it builds towards an exciting conclusion and an impressive final showdown.

SPL 2: A Time for Consequences is several notches above what might have been expected for such a belated sequel, and a very worthwhile follow-up to the original. Backed by a fine cast on top physical form, Soi Cheang delivers two hours of great martial arts action which fans of the form are certain to enjoy.

Tony Jaa's HK debut! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It had been rumored for quite a while, but it finally happened that Tony Jaa came to Hong Kong to star in a local production, although all of Jaa's scenes are set in Thailand. While Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung don't return for this sequel-in-name-only, Wu Jing and Simon Yam both appear. Donnie Yen had credited Tony Jaa's breakthrough film Ong Bak as his inspiration to work hard on the action in the original SPL, so it's only fitting that Jaa make his HK debut in this film. Director Soi Cheang has a history of making dark-themed films, and this one has some of those elements but it's actually not as tragic as some of his past work. Li Chung-Chi choreographs the action, and while the first action scenes are either very brief or chaotic, the finale is well worth the wait. There are a few homages to the original film, and overall this was Tony's best role in a while, not to mention Wu Jing's. Zhang Jin is making a lasting impression in his villain roles. One thing that was missing was any direction connection to the 3 stars from which the original film's title was derived, but one could assume that the characters played by Jaa, Wu and Zhang represent these stars as Yen, Hung and Yam did in the OG. Overall, it's not as good as the first, but the finale in this one earns significantly helps boost it's rating. SPL=5/5, SPL 2=4/5. As a 3rd SPL film has already been announced, it would be a fitting conclusion to have it star both Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa.
