YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Zhang Yibai makes an impressive debut with Spring Subway, a stylish urban romance about the silent suffering of a modern Chinese couple. Geng Le (Beijing Rocks) is Jianbin, a recently unemployed Beijing urbanite whose marriage to designer Xiaohui (Xu Jinglei) is hitting a difficult patch after nearly seven years of matrimony. Xiaohui finds friendship - and possibly more - with a customer (Zhang Yang, director of Shower), while Jianbin keeps up appearances by going to work every morning and riding the Beijing subway all day. On the subway, life continues for him, as he views various couples falling in and out of love. He even becomes emotionally involved with a schoolteacher, and slowly the wall of silence between the married couple becomes ever more impenetrable. Zhang Yibai finds rich territory for exploration among these emotionally-stilted modern Chinese, who might be able to make their lives work if only they could communicate. Shot with stylish, enthralling cinematic panache, Spring Subway is an offbeat and stunning work from an important new voice in Chinese cinema.

The story starts with a “white lie.” Jian Bin, played by Geng Le (“In the Heat of the Sun”) has been unemployed for three months but cannot bring himself to tell his wife of seven years (Xu Jing Lei – “I Love You”). Their relationship has closed down, only able to talk about the most banal topics. Every morning he puts on a suit and tie, takes his briefcase and pretends to leave for work. But instead of going to work he spends the day riding the subway. In the subway, the camera discovers other couples and other worlds. Each pair has a different rhythm and a different way of communicating.

Meanwhile, Jian Bin becomes desperate as he begins to run out of money and excuses. And we also learn that his wife has her secrets too…… Much of the action was shot in the new line of the Beijing subway.

Stylish arthouse film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Spring Subway" is a stylishly lensed, unconventionally told study of the illusory quality of intimacy and commitments among men and women in contemporary China. Husband Jianbin (Geng Le) lost his job, but hasn't yet told his wife. He pretends to go to work, then spends each day riding the subway. Wife Xiaohui (Xu Jinglei) becomes immersed in a friendship with a coffee shop owner (Zhang Yang) who seeks a deeper relationship with her.

Jianbin chats with a chubby chef (played by the actor who seeks kudos in the film "Gimme Kudos"); the chef is about to meet a potential wife, but arrives to find his prospective mate being taken to the hospital after a gas explosion. Jianbin visits the hospital to which the woman was taken. Pretending to be the chef, he returns each day to spend time with the woman. He finds an emotional bond with her that is missing from his marriage. Meanwhile, the chef befriends a promo girl who passes out free samples of a breakfast bar on the subway. We also meet a young man who yearns for a pretty young photo shop worker, yet flees when she agrees to meet him.

Will Jianbin and Xiaohui allow their marriage to dissolve through neglect? Will the chef find his soulmate? Will the young man conquer his fears? All of these stories are addressed in a cryptic style, creating a kind of visual mosaic that draws the viewer into the film. Arthouse film buffs should embrace this fascinating glimpse into relationships in urban China.

Confusing Storyline, Excellent Music! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Wow! The music for this movie is so rich and beautiful! I wish there was a soundtrack for this movie, because the music is that good! It's very inspiring and it catches your ear immeadiatly! Great job to the composers of the music in this movie! Although I have high marks for the music, I really don't think the overall movie is so great. The story is a bit confusing and it seems like the love that the main characters share goes back-and-forth between them. Of course, I've only seen this movie once, so maybe the trick is to watch it a couple of times to really get it! But I know I'll be enjoying the music, as I watch it over again!

Beautiful Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Simple characters, a simple story line, and gentle details combine to form a hauntingly beautiful self-referential urban romance, a romance characterized not by the coming together, but the falling apart. This is a startlingly human film that eschews the familiar plot devices to tell a typical story in a subtle, atypical manner. Definitely worth a watch.
