YesAsia Editorial Description

What do you get when you put Jung Jun Ho (My Boss, My Student) and Kim Won Hee (Marrying the Mafia 2) together in the same movie? One hundred minutes of belly-clenching laughter!

When it comes to comedy, Jung Jun Ho and Kim Won Hee know the best. They star in the hilarious comedy Swindler In My Mom's House, a remake of the 1961 classic film Mother and A Guest that earned legendary director Shin Sang Ok a Best Director prize at the 1st Daejong Film Awards. Director Im Young Sung, previously assistant director for Shadowless Sword, gives the classic a dramatic facelift filled with slapstick comedy and hilarious episodes. The once dignified male protagonist is now portrayed as a wretched swindler, the demure widow as a lustful woman with an insatiable appetite for her newfound prey.

Hae Joo (Kim Won Hee) is a simple-minded, young mother who makes a living by renting out a room to passing travelers and selling flowers. Her undeniable beauty makes her the object of desire amongst the many bachelors in their small rural village. But the lonely widow has her heart set on her new visitor from Seoul, tall and good-looking veterinarian Duk Geun (Jung Jun Ho). Never the shy type, Hae Joo literally throws herself on him, much to dismay of her daughter and longtime admirer Sung Chil. For Duk Geun, a swindler in pursuit of money, Hae Joo's overtness is a nuisance - until he discovers her one million-dollar bank account. All of a sudden, there is a swift turn in the tide and Duk Geun is the one trying to win Hae Joo's heart using all of his known techniques. But, watch out, this naive-looking widow is not to be underestimated.

Mum Fun in Da House! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I haven't seen the original film this comedy version is based on (and I think that was a more serious one), but what you have here is one brilliantly made piece of slapstick fun. Beginning with Duk Geun, a swindler on the skids, owing money to gangsters (can't they ever settle for sweets?), when an elderly woman enters Duk Geun's life and propositions him to find her long lost daughter who she hasn't been able to locate for over 15 years. Duk Geun flatly refuses, telling her he has no intention or time to help her, with a look of total disdain on his face. All until the old lady suddenly produces a large bag of money onto Duk Geun's table, making him an offer he can't refuse. He looks, he cogitates and decides that......there again, maybe he can help, after all. Because lost daughter = loadsofmoney, and a possible reprieve from the sweet hating gangsters!

Well, thats the intro, and what follows is a funny, light and easy going comedy, with an additional smidgen of melodrama for effect at the end. Its the usual and familiar Korean comedy satire we know and love, but this is definitely a well made movie of its type. The antics contained are certainly never dull and when this movie begins, you know straight away you're going to enjoy it! The mother and daughter characters give plenty of kooky entertainment by their cross banter, visual slapstick and sharp humor. Won Hee Kim is excellent as the mother Hae Joo and her youthful nuttiness and electric individuality will bring similar character types to mind played by K-Actresss Hyun Young, Hye Soo Kim and Jung Hwa Uhm. Hae Joo is always trying to stay youthful minded in parallel to her own daughter (even wearing her daughter's school uniform at one stage, in a fit of eccentricity!) and her lively and bonkers nature should win many over! Eun Ah Goh who plays the daughter is also superb here....and quite cute, too! Jung Jun Ho as the boyish looking swindler Duk Geun, (who happens to find even more money offerings when he comes across Hae Joo's ready to overspill bank book), lodges with mother/daughter as he searches for the old woman's lost daughter. Duk Geun does of course become the love interest to Hae Joo straight away, as she is constantly vying for possible suiters (and the daughter also seems to take a fancy to Duk Geun, too!).With these three characters you get a very lively combo which all fit together excellently, producing explosive chemistry and camaraderie. Alongside them are also three stooge type characters that appear throughout and provide good "Marrying the Mafia" type humor.

Its all predictable stuff, but I don't think in this case it really matters, as you get such an excellent cast on top form here, and by all their verve and energy - you can tell they enjoyed making this and reflecting that - so does the viewer! Don't expect anything new in the K-comedy front (especially a "My Sassy Girl" grail-type-search-is-over-equivalent-classic!), but with this film's familiarity and brilliantly executed wit, its loads of fun! Family entertainment at its best! EnJOY!
