One of the most beloved novels in Japanese literature history gets a new twist in Tale of Genji: A Thousand-Year Enigma. In addition to the familiar story of Genji and his love affairs, this new version by director Tsuruhashi Yasuo (Love Never to End) presents a new twist by integrating the story of the novel's creator Murasaki and her increasing obsession with her literary creation. Acclaimed actress Nakatani Miki (Memories of Matsuko) plays the legendary author, while popular young actor Ikuta Toma (Ningen Shikaku) lends his handsome charm to Genji. Maki Yoko (Moteki), Tabe Mikako (Fish Story), Ashina Sei (Kamui), Renbutsu Misako (Kimi ni Todoke), and Tanaka Rena (Yamazakura) also co-star as the women in Genji's life in this elegant adaptation.

During the Heian period, court official Fujiwara (Higashiyama Noriyuki) orders Murasaki (Nakatani Miki) to write a romance story for his daughter Shoshi in order to make her more attractive to the emperor. As a result, Murasaki creates a story about Genji (Ikuta Toma), a fictional emperor's son who looks for love in several ladies of the court - including his wife Aoi no Ue (Tabe Mikako), the refined Rokujo no Miyasudokoro (Tanaka Rena), and his stepmother Fujitsubo (Maki Yoko). As the audiences in the Heian court grow enchanted by the story, Fujiwara begins to fall for Murasaki. However, the author realizes that she is gradually falling in love with her protagonist instead.
