Directed by Hsin Chi (1924-2010), the 1965 B&W film The Bride Who Has Returned from Hell is a classic of Taiwanese Hokkien-language cinema. The gothic romance starring Jin Mei and Ke Jun Hsung is inspired by Victoria Holt's Mistress of Mellyn.

Bai Rui Mei (Jin Mei) returns to Taiwan from Singapore, and becomes a governess at the mansion of wealthy widower Wang (Ke Jun Hsung). Rui Mei is actually the younger sister of Wang's late wife, but she conceals her identity in order to investigate the truth behind her sister's death. Haunting incidents occur one after another in the Wang family home, and Rui Mei comes upon her sister's diary. As she gradually gets closer to the truth, she also falls in love with Wang. On the eve of their wedding, the killer appears.
