YesAsia Editorial Description

Before Shaolin Soccer there was The Champions, a kung-fu soccer comedy produced by Yuen Woo Ping (action director of The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)! Charismatic Yuen Biao stars as Lee Tong, a country kid whose natural athleticism becomes his ticket to the world of professional soccer. Unfortunately, Lee's first act upon arriving in Hong Kong is to offend the sport's number one player, King (Dick Wei), who uses Lee's initiation into the soccer world as an excuse to torture the kid. But Lee is undaunted, and when he finally gets the chance to show his stuff on the field, he becomes an instant sensation - which only fuels the jealousy of the corrupt King even further. Eventually the two square off in a no holds-barred soccer match, and the price is more than just pride...the loser may have to give up their legs! Co-starring Moon Lee and Cheung Kwok Keung, The Champions is an enjoyable and wildly entertaining Hong Kong Cinema classic, and an absolute must-see for any fan of Yuen Biao!

Country Bumpkin Made Good Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Don't we all love a fairy tale ending - poor orphaned kid in a country village made good as a professional soccer star.

Yuen Biao played a young & altheletic orphaned country boy who went to the big smoke in order to escape the local rich boy (who enjoy using bully tactics to get what he wanted).

His first encounter with Dick Wei, was nothing to sing about cause due to mishaps and misunderstanding, Dick was embarrassed during an opening ceremony function. Later in the day, he befriended Cheung (a fanatic wannabe soccer player) & Moon Lee (his sister). Cheung is a layabout with no proper job and Moon Lee suggested they try joining the local soccer club to learn a skill and maybe get selected into the team. Unfortunately, Dick Wei, a professional soccer star (who's also on the take) trains the recruits and took the chance to ridicule & punish YB for the embarrassment he suffered earlier. Undaunted with the mistreatment, YB soldiered on and finally had a chance to show his skill in an unplan match. He kicked the winning goal and thought he was the hero. But he became the outcast instead cause the club was meant to loose the match.

However, the owner of the rival club spotted his talent & natural skills and recruited him instead. Now on a roll, he got his good pal Cheung onto the team and both became hot on the circuit and good fortune followed suit. In the grand finale of the state match (fought out in the rain), thunder=legs prove he has more to him than meets the eye.

In the opening sequel, we can see some of YB's kicking skills. So good, so clean and so fun. Yahoo!
