YesAsia Editorial Description

2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), and a host of films were specially made to commemorate the occasion. Among those films, The Founding of a Republic is the undisputed centerpiece of the lot, due mainly to its epic scope and the magnitude of talents involved in the production. Produced under the banner of the state-run China Film Group and its director Han Sanping, the ambitious project is helmed by Fifth-Generation director Huang Jianxin (Gimme Kudos) from a script by Wang Xingdong (The One Man Olympics). The historical epic chronicles the Chinese civil war from 1945 to 1949, during which the Chinese Communist Party overthrew the rule of Kuomintang and eventually established the PRC. The film opened in Mainland two weeks before the October 1st National Day, and the strong buzz has powered the film to stunning grosses at the box office. By its fifth weekend, this unstoppable juggernaut has raked in over RMB400 million to become the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time.

Perhaps what makes The Founding of a Republic such an attention grabber and commercial triumph is the huge ensemble cast that has come together under the great patriotic cause this movie represents. Over a hundred big-name Chinese showbiz personalities get starring roles in the event film, including many international superstars that reportedly make cameo appearances for free. Occupying the main roles are Tang Guoqiang (playing Mao Zedong), Zhang Guoli (Chiang Kai Shek), Xu Qing (Soong Ching Ling), Vivian Wu (Soong Mei Ling), Aloys Chen (Chiang Ching Kuo), Liu Jin (Zhou Enlai), Wang Wufu (Zhu De), and Wang Xueqi (Li Tsung Jen). In supporting parts there are Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi, Vicki Zhao, Huang Xiaoming, Liu Ye, Guo Xiaodong, Tong Dawei, Ge You, Hu Jun, Zhang Hanyu, Chen Hao, Ning Jing, Eva Huang, Chen Daoming, and Jiang Wen. Add to the mix popular Hong Kong movie stars like Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Leon Lai, Donnie Yen, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and the stargazing still doesn't end there - even A-list directors Chen Kaige and Feng Xiaogang are onboard taking rare turns in front of the camera!

How you respond to "The Founding of a Republic" will depend largely on your tolerance for star-studded, slickly-made political propaganda. In this film, the Communist rebels are noble, pure-hearted souls, while the Kuomintang are devious, corrupt killers. Chiang Kai-Shek is a cold, calculating tyrant. Mao Zedong is a warm-hearted, mild-mannered, family-loving man of the people, always willing to reach out a hand to embrace his opponents in search of peaceful solutions, always with a common touch. He's a secular saint, a prince among men, whose only fault is his chain-smoking habit. Truly, the attempts to beatify Mao become almost comical at times. Airbrushed out of this version of history are the Communist siege of Changchun that left 160,000 civilians dead, any mention of Mao's wife Jiang Qing, any disagreements among the Communist leadership, any killings by Communists of landlords or Nationalist sympathizers, etc. In short, this is mythology, not history.

As mythology, this tale is engaging, although it covers too many events in too short a period of time and too often lacks a human dimension. All of the cameos by big movie stars became a bit of a distraction. Hey, there's Jet Li! Look, Vivian Wu! Fan Bing-bing! Oh, and Liu Ye, and Ge You, and Leon Lai! Isn't that Jackie Chan behind those glasses? Hey, Donnie Yen and Zhao Wei, trying to look very serious! There's Leung Ka-Fai ... and Ning Jing ... and, oh, it's Zhang Ziyi! Aaandy Laauuu! I also chuckled whenever the American ambassador to China talked, as he spoke with a strong Australian accent.

Some day someone will make an honest, powerful, compelling film about these events. While we wait for that great film, break out the popcorn and enjoy this almost-endearingly faux-serious attempt to rebuild the reputations of Mao, the Party, and the CCPPC.

Quite well-done. Not an easy task to compress a series of major events leading to the founding of the PRC,and yet come up

with a relatively smooth-flowing story telling.

However, the characters for the credits at the end and for the names/titles of individuals in the pic are awefully too small to be legible
even on a large screen. This is indeed an unnecessary flaw. Make them larger, so that viewers have no difficulty in catching them.
