Gordon Chan (Painted Skin) returns with the final installment of the epic 3D wuxia/fantasy trilogy based on Wen Ruian's famous novels in The Four III! Following the events of The Four II, Emotionless (Crystal Liu Yifei, A Chinese Ghost Story) has left Six Doors, as has Cold Blood (Deng Chao, Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame), who has decided to investigate the death of Lord Bu (Cheng Taishen, Under the Hawthorn Tree) on his own. The departure of two of the four constables has effectively left Six Doors defunct. At this time, trouble begins to brew in the Imperial Palace as Emperor Huizong (Alec Su, The Assassins) plans to travel incognito to the outside world. When he is almost assassinated and subsequently disappears, Cold Blood, Emotionless, Iron Hands (Collin Chou, Badges of Fury) and Life Snatcher (Ronald Cheng, Golden Chickensss) must band together once again under Master Zhuge (Anthony Wong, White Vengeance) to save the empire from a massive conspiracy.

Professional Review of "The Four III (2014) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"

December 15, 2014

This professional review refers to The Four III (2014) (Blu-ray) (2D) (Hong Kong Version)
The final instalment of Gordon Chan's The Four series arrives with The Four: Final Battle (a much better title than the awkward The Four Three), bringing to a conclusion the adventures of the Divine Constabulary. Based on the novels by Wen Ruian, the film was again co-directed by Chan and Janet Chun, with headline stars Crystal Liu Yifei (A Chinese Ghost Story), Deng Chao (Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame), Collin Chou (Badges of Fury) and Ronald Cheng (Vulgaria) all returning for one last bash.

The film picks up directly after the events of The Four II, with Emotionless (Liu Yifei) having left the Divine Constabulary after learning that Iron Hands (Collin Chou) was one of those responsible for the massacre of her family, leaving only Cold Blood (Deng Chao) and Life Snatcher (Ronald Cheng) to investigate an assassination attempt on the now missing Emperor Huizong (Alec Su, The Assassins). It soon becomes clear that a massive conspiracy is afoot, and Master Zhuge (Anthony Wong, The Untold Story) tries to get the gang back together in order to save the land from ruin.

There's quite a lot more to the plot than this of course, The Four series having been marked by fairly complex narratives filled with sinister schemes, hidden identities and a huge supporting cast of characters whose names and motivations are too many to easily remember. As such, it's definitely advisable to have seen the previous two entries before tackling Final Battle, though thankfully the film does provide a much-needed brief recap of events before launching into its own tale.

Somewhat curiously for a concluding chapter, Gordon Chan and Janet Chun don't seem to have been aiming for anything too earth-shattering, and though the film does bring everything together in suitable fashion, as an epic it's fairly understated, spending more time on its characters and their ongoing troubles than on grand themes. This is both a blessing and a curse - while the script isn't strong enough to result in any actual character development or emotional attachment, there's certainly something to be said for this quieter and more grounded approach, and the film is engaging enough in its own modest way. On the other hand, some viewers may feel a little underwhelmed by the general lack of the grandiose drama usually seen in this kind of film, and though it trundles along at a decent pace, there's a definite absence of any urgency. The cast are all fine and do their bit to keep the audience interested, and this does help to make the film more likeable and watchable than it might otherwise have been, there being a reasonable amount of chemistry and spark between the leads and the always great Anthony Wong.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the film is stronger when it comes to action, Chan and Chun including a good amount of battles, duels and magical powers. Although there's nothing jaw-dropping on show, the film features some solid choreography and set pieces, all of which are creatively staged and make good use of what was obviously a high budget. The special effects and computer work similarly impress, and the film is definitely one of the better looking fantasies from China in recent years.

This does make up in part at least for its shortcomings in other areas, and though unlikely to be appearing on many best of year lists, The Four: Final Battle is a perfectly acceptable piece of wuxia fun. Bolstered by its likeable stars and moments of spectacle, it's a fitting end to a series which though never particularly memorable, has consistently offered decent entertainment value.
