YesAsia Editorial Description

There's a good reason why the newly released DVD version of Lee Du Yong's 1980 crime thriller The Last Witness is being spotlighted almost three decades after the film's theatrical release. After suffering the misfortune of having more than a third of its original scenes cut out by censorship, the film remarkably resurrected itself as a cinematic classic through word of mouth by contemporary filmmakers like Park Chan Wook and Ryoo Seung Wan who consider the film to be a timeless masterpiece. Thanks to their endless campaign and great efforts by the Korean Film Archive, The Last Witness is now fully restored in its entirety, ready to be appreciated by movie fans.

Styled like a road movie, the film follows a detective assigned to a mysterious murder case. Replete with clever plot twists and quick editing cuts, the film brilliantly captures the essence of the late 70s and early 80s in Korea. Originally based on a novel, The Last Witness was later re-adapted in 2001 by director Bae Chang Ho in the same-titled film starring Lee Jung Jae, Jung Jun Ho and Lee Mi Yeon.

While seeking clues in Yang Dal Soo's murder case, detective Oh Byung Ho (Ha Myung Joong, Mother) meets Kang Man Ho, a man from the victim's past whose testimony leads Oh to two prime suspects: Tae Young, the son of the victim's mistress Ji Hye (Jung Yun Hee, The One Love), and Hwang Ba Woo (Choi Bool Am, The Grand Chef) whose longtime grudge against the victim perfectly fits the motive. As it turns out, Hwang is being granted parole after serving 20 years in prison for the murder of a man named Han Dong Joo whose identity shocks the detective. To complicate the matter, a 20-year-old mystery linked to a North Korean militant leader reveals an awful truth about the murder case that has lust, betrayal, and revenge written all over it.

In "The Last Witness", Ha Myung Joong plays Oh Byung Ho, a rumpled-looking, overcoat-wearing police detective reminiscent of Peter Falk in the old "Columbo" TV series. However, this film tells a much darker and more twisted story than any Columbo ever tried to solve. Set in the 1970s, the movie deals with murders that resulted from a web of intrigue that has its origins in the Korean War. At the heart of the story is the lovely Ji Hye (Jung Yun Hee), the daughter of a North Korean commander. Poor Ji Hye ends up suffering a lifetime of abuse and betrayal and the fruits of that life yield seeds of bitterness that will have the direst of consequences. As we watch Detective Oh untangle the mystery behind the murders we get a panoramic view of life in Korea in the 1970s and see how the horrors of war can continue to cause ripples in people's lives down through the subsequent decades. "The Last Witness" is a fascinating, intricate, and interestingly-filmed story. I recommend it highly. Prospective purchasers should note a couple things. First, this is a very long movie, lasting over 2 1/2 hours. Second, while originally censored scenes have been restored to this DVD version of the movie, the movie does not appear to have been digitally remastered and the image quality is inconsistent. Don't let that deter you. This thriller is well worth watching and its unexpected ending packs a real punch.
