Professional Review of "The Legend Of Fong Sai Yuk (DVD) (Special Collector's Edition) (US Version)"
This professional review refers to Fong Sai Yuk
The corrupt Ching Dynasty has the populace kowtowing in fear to the Manchu Emperor. The only hope for Han Chinese are secret revolutionaries, the Red Flower Society, who are on the run from face-shredding Governor Oryeetor, played by adorable Chiu Man-cheuk, looking pale and scary. He wants a book of names, they don't want to give it up, and so the chase is on. Feeling grossly underpaid, Jet Li parted ways with auteur Tsui Hark and took a stab at his own version of the traditional Chinese folk hero film. Forming a production company, Eastern Production Ltd., and choosing Fong Sai-yuk as his hero du jour he lined up a stable of heavy hitters for this well-made film with a distinctly lighter touch. The film is a middle class comedy revolving around weddings, mistaken identities, games, and the plight of the new folks in town who happen to be crass official, Tiger Lui, and his family. Desperate to be accepted he offers his daughter's hand to whoever wins a kung fu contest. To the fore comes one of the Ten Most Outstanding Youngsters in Canton and Invincible Magic Fist, Fong Sai-yuk (Jet Li). Playing Sai-yuk as a young cad whose idea of fun is hanging out with his abrasive kung fu mom (grand dame, Josephine Siao Fong-fong), Jet Li hypnotizes the camera with his lazy charm. He loses the contest, but his mom saves Fong family face by winning, disguised as a man, and immediately Tiger's wife, Sui Wan (Sibelle Hu), falls in love with her. A series of misunderstandings snowballs from there. The joy of this film is the primacy of the domestic drama over the national, until finally the two collide. To Sai-yuk and his mom the revolution is all a glorious goof, they even take time while saving Papa Fong from human meat grinder, Oryeetor, to trade wise cracks and clown around. Jet Li cribs from Jackie Chan's "ouch, that punch hurt" stylebook, only he mugs with a little more dignity. And no one does straight-faced absurdism better than Jet Li, unless it's Josephine Siao Fong-fong. Child star of the 50s, child psychologist today, Siao Fong-fong chews up the screen, proving that like most great dramatic actresses she's really a comedian at heart. Chiu Man-cheuk, discovered by arthouse director Ann Hui (who also executive produced), is here in one of his first roles, and the innovative cinematography is by ace camerman, Jingle Ma, who uses beautiful depth of focus effects and a handheld camera during fight scenes to lend an immediacy to the proceedings. by Grady Hendrix |

It took a little getting used to that Jet Li & the character he was portraying has comedic traits. If you can get passed the gender confusion humor, every fight in this movie is enjoyable & worth while. You can't help but cheer for Fong Sai Yuk's mother & "mother in-law". A Jet Li movie I continue to enjoy to re-visit. |

it cannot get away the "wong fei hung"'s image when watching jet li. too similar in many ways. but what bothers me most is its dialogues with too many today's slangs, and what even worse is adding some english in it, which totally ruins the movie, and not funny at all with those gags. fight scenes aren't too bad. not jet li's best movie. wong fei hung is way better!! |

This is definitely one of my favorite film's from Jet Li as it blends comedy and action together so perfectly and I also love the fight scenes between Jet Li and Chao Wen Cho(another great martial artist). Another thing I would like to mention is the chemistry between Jet and Josephine Siu(the women who plays his mother) is just so good you have to wonder why they are not in more films together. |
