YesAsia Editorial Description
The Mission is a cinematic rarity: it's an action film that derives its greatest thrills from stillness and the threat of conflict. Johnnie To's action sequences are exactingly staged and breathtakingly quiet, but possess as much power as any bullet ballet. The actors are uniformly convincing, and create characters of believable depth and charismatic cool, despite having very little actual dialogue. In The Mission, honor and brotherhood aren't talked about, they're demonstrated with compelling visual strokes. Critics apparently agreed as The Mission took Best Picture honors from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, and director Johnnie To won numerous Best Director awards for his superb cinematic vision.

Professional Review of "The Mission (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"
The Mission is a masculine film. No heterosexual romance, no woman. It is all about men and guns. To me, it is also a tribute to Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Reviewed by: Kantorates - Cinespot.com |

Gunfire, and plenty of it
Consider it a plus that the Mei Ah DVD release of director Johnnie To's "The Mission" (Chinese title: 'Gunfire') has been discontinued. Let's hope that a remastered version of the film gets released soon by a more responsible company. The Mei Ah DVD has the grainy, dark, imprecise image quality of a VCD or VHS tape and, worse, bears a watermark of the company's name running across the screen throughout the movie, annoyingly visible during the film's frequent dimly lit scenes. The English subtitles, too, are dodgy.
Besides these problems, is the movie any good? By Johnnie To's high standards, it is a minor, but gripping achievement. Director To skips most of the story-telling basics and gets straight to the action. Someone is seeking to bump off crime boss Lung (Eddy Ko Hung). We know essentially nothing about Lung, nor about why someone seeks his death. Lung hires five top gunsels (tautly played by Francis Ng, Anthony Wong, Roy Cheung, Lam Suet, and Jackie Lui) to protect him and to find the culprit. None of the characters is given a backstory; they simply are plunged into the action. Whatever we learn about anyone arises solely from how they respond to their circumstances. The film delivers a series of shoot-out set pieces, the most gripping of which occurs within an empty shopping mall. The terseness of Johnnie To's story has the benefit of not weighing the action down with pointless subplots, but has the downside of leaving the viewer not particularly caring about the fate of any of these cold-blooded thugs. As a consequence, the movie's surprise ending feels like a loss of nerve by director To. "The Mission" offers viewers a tutorial on how to shoot gripping action sequences and, until that last scene, details the interactions among these paid killers in what seems an unvarnished, honest way. One final note: When someone produces a remastered version of this film, let's hope they provide new incidental soundtrack music; Chung Chi Wing's music is distractingly cheesy. |

As folks have already mentioned, there are multiple problems with this dvd. If the poor video and audio quality were the only issue, it would not be notable when compared to other Mei-Ah hatchet jobs... But all Mei-Ah releases of the mission have TWO LINES OF CHINESE TEXT AS A WATERMARK RUNNING ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE IMAGE!!!! This is true even of the so-called Tai-Seng "U.S." release, which is the Mei-Ah R0 release with a gold Tai-Seng sticker stuck on the dvd case. |

DVD Quality
The movie is great, I enjoyed it tremendously, but be warned... As mentioned in another review, the quality of the DVD is quite low.
The picture quality is not good, the movie is in forced widescreen (hardcoded letterboxes), and there is a faint watermark running through the center of the picture (from far left all the way to the far right). It is not a problem with yesasia's product, as I have seen people purchase from other places and get the same problems. Despite the technical problems, the DVD is a must-own for triad/crime movie enthusiasts. |

fine movie, bad dvd
the movie is acceptable if you enjoy watching moives in an artisitc way. story is no exciting, good casting. what bothers me the most though is the quality of the dvd. from begin to end, i had to watch the movie with a "watermark" or ghosted image of the film company center across the screen. so annoying and running it with so many beautiful scenes. anyone notice that?? |
