YesAsia Editorial Description

At once a stunning genre film and a surprising cinematic treat, Johnnie To's The Mission is Hong Kong filmmaking at its finest. The plot is deceptively simple: five disparate triads (Francis Ng, Anthony Wong, Roy Cheung, Lam Suet, and Jackie Lui) are called together to protect Mr. Lung (Eddy Ko), a triad godfather threatened with assassination. The five find themselves at occasional odds, but their implicit understanding of the criminal underworld pushes all differences aside in favor of The Mission. But just as honor and brotherhood can bring five triads together, it can irrevocably pit them against one another…

The Mission is a cinematic rarity: it's an action film that derives its greatest thrills from stillness and the threat of conflict. Johnnie To's action sequences are exactingly staged and breathtakingly quiet, but possess as much power as any bullet ballet. The actors are uniformly convincing, and create characters of believable depth and charismatic cool, despite having very little actual dialogue. In The Mission, honor and brotherhood aren't talked about, they're demonstrated with compelling visual strokes. Critics apparently agreed as The Mission took Best Picture honors from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, and director Johnnie To won numerous Best Director awards for his superb cinematic vision.

Professional Review of "The Mission (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"

November 18, 2005

The Mission is a masculine film. No heterosexual romance, no woman. It is all about men and guns. To me, it is also a tribute to Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.

Five killers, Roy (Francis Ng), Shin (Jacky Lui), Curtis (Anthony Wong), Mike (Roy Cheung) and James (Lam Suet), are employed by a crime boss Lung (Eddy Ko) who almost got killed in an assassination attempt. Their job is to seek out the enemy of Lung. The tension and the danger of this mission bring the men closer to each other. When the mission is over, their friendship is put to another test. One of them has an affair with Lung's wife and Lung orders this guy to be killed. How will they find a resolve eventually?

As Johhnie To once revealed in an interview, he is a great admirer of Akira Kurosawa. It is obvious that he has showed his admiration and respect in this film. Starting from the beginning, the handwritten credit already reminds us of Kurosawa's films, especially Seven Samurai. If you have seen Seven Samurai, you will probably remember the opening credit which is composed of powerful handwritings. In terms of the technical aspects, Kurosawa's trademarks like the use of wipe and fast-paced editing are widely employed in this film. The composition also exhibits notable reference from Seven Samurai. Kurosawa loves to use long shots in group conversation scenes. He intends to capture the different reactions of all the actors on the screen at the same time. This kind of long shot greatly enhances the interaction among the actors since they are actually looking at the reactions of the other actors when they are presenting the dialogues; on the other hand, it also allows the viewers to have a more comprehensive view of the scene, since they can choose whose face or reaction to focus on. In The Mission, there are many conversation scenes among the five killers. In most of these scenes, Johnnie To employs a long shot and as a result, the specific reactions of the five guys are all captured on the frame at once. The viewers can have a better understanding of what the characters think by observing their respective facial expressions.

Although it is not a "save the farmers from the bandit" story, The premises of both films are basically the same. Five killers (seven samurai) are hired to protect the vulnerable crime boss (farmers), there is a love affair between the youngest killer and the boss's wife (love affair between the youngest samurai and a farmer's daughter). But Johnnie To did not merely copy everything from Seven Samurai, he added his own touch and turned it into a romantic film. By "romance" I do not mean the killers are having any homosexual love affairs, what I like is the male bond developed among the five killers during the mission. It is a solid depiction about a partnership of trust and support among five men, and it is a trademark of Johnnie To's heroic series, for instance, the intimate bond between Lau Ching-wan and Leon Lai in A Hero Never Dies is remarkably captivating.

To many people, The Mission might not be a very entertaining flick. Not a single character in the film is highlighted, they operate and function as a group instead. Without any glamorous personality or commercial plot, what this film presents us is the essence of pure cinema, an exploration of the boundary of the cinematic language itself.

DVD (HK version) - The image and sound are both decent, while the subtitles are sometimes not easy to read. Special features include chapter selection, official trailer, cast and crew information and an additional trailer of another film. It is one of Johnnie To's best, get the DVD now!

Gunfire, and plenty of it Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Consider it a plus that the Mei Ah DVD release of director Johnnie To's "The Mission" (Chinese title: 'Gunfire') has been discontinued. Let's hope that a remastered version of the film gets released soon by a more responsible company. The Mei Ah DVD has the grainy, dark, imprecise image quality of a VCD or VHS tape and, worse, bears a watermark of the company's name running across the screen throughout the movie, annoyingly visible during the film's frequent dimly lit scenes. The English subtitles, too, are dodgy.

Besides these problems, is the movie any good? By Johnnie To's high standards, it is a minor, but gripping achievement. Director To skips most of the story-telling basics and gets straight to the action. Someone is seeking to bump off crime boss Lung (Eddy Ko Hung). We know essentially nothing about Lung, nor about why someone seeks his death. Lung hires five top gunsels (tautly played by Francis Ng, Anthony Wong, Roy Cheung, Lam Suet, and Jackie Lui) to protect him and to find the culprit. None of the characters is given a backstory; they simply are plunged into the action. Whatever we learn about anyone arises solely from how they respond to their circumstances.

The film delivers a series of shoot-out set pieces, the most gripping of which occurs within an empty shopping mall. The terseness of Johnnie To's story has the benefit of not weighing the action down with pointless subplots, but has the downside of leaving the viewer not particularly caring about the fate of any of these cold-blooded thugs. As a consequence, the movie's surprise ending feels like a loss of nerve by director To.

"The Mission" offers viewers a tutorial on how to shoot gripping action sequences and, until that last scene, details the interactions among these paid killers in what seems an unvarnished, honest way. One final note: When someone produces a remastered version of this film, let's hope they provide new incidental soundtrack music; Chung Chi Wing's music is distractingly cheesy.

Great film, AWFUL dvd Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
As folks have already mentioned, there are multiple problems with this dvd. If the poor video and audio quality were the only issue, it would not be notable when compared to other Mei-Ah hatchet jobs... But all Mei-Ah releases of the mission have TWO LINES OF CHINESE TEXT AS A WATERMARK RUNNING ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE IMAGE!!!! This is true even of the so-called Tai-Seng "U.S." release, which is the Mei-Ah R0 release with a gold Tai-Seng sticker stuck on the dvd case.

DVD Quality Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
The movie is great, I enjoyed it tremendously, but be warned... As mentioned in another review, the quality of the DVD is quite low.
The picture quality is not good, the movie is in forced widescreen (hardcoded letterboxes), and there is a faint watermark running through the center of the picture (from far left all the way to the far right).

It is not a problem with yesasia's product, as I have seen people purchase from other places and get the same problems. Despite the technical problems, the DVD is a must-own for triad/crime movie enthusiasts.
