Sun Yanzi Having her Moments

What springs to my mind when the name Sun Yanzi is mentioned is an impressively strong voice reminiscent of Alanis Morissette or Avril Lavigne that is unique enough to have scored this Singaporean girl a firm seat on the singer/songwriter list in Taiwan. It has been almost three years since her debut in 2000 and it is about time to get a share of her collected success on this compilation album "The Moment" with 5 brand-new and 15 well-received tracks. Much news has been stirred up concerning her taking a supposedly 1-year break from her soaring career after this release. I however think it is actually very normal, for example, for the western counterparts to take at least one whole year or possibly more to publish one studio album in order to secure the quality. I will definitely put my vote for quality time plus quality work rather than those factory-molded albums after compilations of albums.

Five new tracks. Five different treats. My personal favorite is the pop-rock led by guitars "Not Bother to Care" (Track 3). What can be concluded from her previous 6 albums is that those pop-cute teen tunes are not Yanzi's cup of tea, which is good as it will be a waste of her unusually pleasant vocal. Credits should mostly go to the background vocal arrangers and the background vocalists (actually Yanzi does most of the job in a variety of ways, which makes it remarkable). A free-flowing mixture of clapping, laughter, cocks crow, snore and most amazingly the opera-like strong female background vocal at the end makes a perfect match with the theme that nothing is really a big deal to a carefree girl.

Carrying on the upbeat tempo is "Under the Sun" (Track 5) which is the theme song for the annual function "Solar Project 2003" organized by a Hong Kong radio station. Actually most of the new members to Yanzi's song list have their own story behind. "This Moment" (Track 1), with the soft and a bit sorrow tune delivered by resonant piano, can serve as a farewell song with Yanzi looking back at the past three years in the business. The final line of the lyrics is really beautiful and touching reading as follows "Having a long vacation is never escapism. Farewell is to continue the glamour of infinity." While Gigi Leung Wing-kei is doing the Cantonese version, Yanzi plays her magic by showing a completely different flavor on the very same made-in-Hongkong melody on "Meeting" (Track 2) which is one of the theme songs of the 2003 romance "Turn Left Turn Right". Compared with Gigi Leung's usually mild and gentle rendition, that of Yanzi has an edge of sonority in her voice giving a refreshing note of optimism that hope is what we should always have in order to come across the special someone in our life.

Among the other 15 previously released songs, the melodies of 6 of them come directly from the young talent in her early 20's. While most of her music surges with waves of orchestral power featuring stringed instruments such as "Very Good" (Track 4), "Capriciousness" (Track 7) and "Expression of Eyes", both "Someone" and "Direction of Nobody" stand out with distinctive arrangements starting off as deceiving slow-tempo ballads, which turn out to be hard rock tunes in the chorus. Yanzi has also done a perfect job in getting in line with unique music styles presenting a voice gamut ranging from her smoldering middle tones to a hard soprano.

It is of course a pity that some other smash hits like "Magic" and "Green Light" are not included. However, does the fact that she has accumulated more chart-toppers than one single album can take not even further reflect how much Sun Yanzi has achieved over the past 3 years? Overall, "The Moment" stands as a living proof of how well-deserved the acclaim of this young successful singer/song writer that mixes pop sensibility with soul-searching is.

Yan Zi shines through Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Well, what can I say except sensational! 'The Moment' captures the magic of an exceptional series of albums from Yan Zi. The packaging is gorgeous and well-planned, and the booklet and bonus DVD are all great fun, including an interview (& a highlights MV for 'The Moment' song which is beautiful), candid pictures from 'The Moment' photo shoot, and footage of the most memorable moments in Yan Zi's short but remarkable career to date.

Disc 1 includes five new songs, which all vary in style and confirm her status as an amazing singer.
Each track is good for different reasons, with track 1, 2 and 5 being my personal favourites. Track 2, the theme from the film 'Turn Left, Turn Right', is quiet and thoughtful, yet subtley powerful; while 'The Moment' (track 1) is the perfect song to celebrate her career thus far with its mixture of piano (reminiscent of 'Tian Hei Hei') and its warm melody. Track 5 is cheerful and exciting, a great way to end the new disc.

Disc 2, (wonderfully titled 'Na Yi Ke', or 'That Moment'), includes a great selection of favourites from her past albums. Worthy of special mention are: 'Tian Hei Hei' (track 3), 'Wo Yao De Xin Fu' (track 1), 'Hen Hao' (track 4), 'Kite' (track 6) and 'Yong Yuan' (track 10).

Although I understand that choosing only 15 songs for this disc would have been a hard task, and that Yan Zi and the company chose well; I must admit to being disappointed by the exclusion of a few tracks. Two songs I feel should be on this collection are: 'Lu Guang' (Green Light) and 'Perfect'.

Overall, no one can question the quality of this product. If you are want to get a taste of Yan Zi for the first time, already love her music, or are just looking for a decent CD - then this is the perfect choice.

Things about her songs and talent Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I think compared to others singers, I find that she is the best among all because the songs she had sung, I find it amazing and it really shocking to hear sometimes. I am one of her fans and for all the songs she sang before, she really did express her feelings towards that song to make it expressing and touch. If she gonna to sing pop or rock, she is also really that talented. Just till she come back on year 2005, I think she is able to produce as many songs as possible to build up her status.I have in you ,' Sun Yan Zi' Jia You!!!!!!

the most amazing singer Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I had heard The Moment only when I downloaded the sample from the Warner Music website... and my first thought was, what a great song! Genuinely, truly, honestly.

2 months later, I forgot all about it, because it was only a sample song, I didn't get to keep it on my computer. And just two hours ago, I just happened to go to my local CD store and bought it, simply because it was about the one Yan Zi thing I didn't own yet. When I got home, I plopped down on my couch and popped the DVD in my player. Boy was I in a surprise.

What can I say but... WOW. Not the cute "wow omgomg!!"... the other wow of wonder and awe. The whole thing almost made me cry... sniff... sigh. It was kind of like a movie trailer of all her concerts, music videos (a lot), documentaries, events, shows, blah blah blah. A complete, entire exhaustive history of her 'little' spot and impact on the music industry. I'd give it as many stars as there are up in the sky. I love her... she's so honest and upfront about everything, so happy, always smiling...

You have no idea what you're missing. Buy it, not because I said so, but because she's actually worth your hard-earned money. She really is amazing.

A true diva Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A new discoverer of Sun Yan Zi's music, this collection was perfect for me. Having only heard several songs, I was most captured by Tian Hei Hei and decided to purchase one album.
This collection of famous songs from the last 3 years, five new tracks and a great DVD is perfect.

New listeners such as myself, current fans, and anyone interested in quality music should buy The Moment Deluxe Edition. Sun Yan Zi is a truly talented diva.
