Twenty years after the classic King of Comedy, Stephen Chow returns with The New King of Comedy! The comedy king writes and directs an updated story about the trials and tribulations of a passionate bit actor who just needs a break. Continuing his tradition of discovering new actresses, Chow picked the relatively unknown E Jingwen to be the plucky star of the Chinese New Year blockbuster alongside Wang Baoqiang. Filled with nostalgic references to the original King of Comedy, the film is a classic Stephen Chow underdog story with awkward heroes, ridiculous gags, nonsensical comedy and that uncanny ability to stir hearts with tragicomic turns and bittersweet tenacity.

Dreamy (E Jingwen) is a background actor who has been futilely chasing her dreams at Hengdian World Studios for over ten years. With her plain appearances, not-so young age and shameless hamming, she constantly gets rejected and mocked even as an extra. But still, Dreamy believes and persists. She's elated when she gets selected for a film starring her childhood idol Marco (Wang Baoqiang), but the arrogant has-been turns out to be a bad actor who lashes out at everyone on set. Shaken awake by Marco's ill treatment and her boyfriend's betrayal, the disillusioned Dreamy realizes it may finally be time to give up on her dream.

Dreamy dreams of becoming a movie star, she has been working hard for years but has not been able to get beyond day player gigs. Her father gives her tremendous pressure and her family tries to convince her to quit. Only her boyfriend Charlie remains supportive. On a movie set, Dreamy runs into Marco, an actor who had once enlightened her. But Marco is washed-up now and his low self-esteem has turned him into a manic depressive. He torments Dreamy relentlessly. She continues to do her job enthusiastically, but finally cannot endure the repearted knocks on her dream and decides to give it up, go back to her parents and find a steady job. But then she gets the call: she has aced the audition she has done for a famous director for a leading role in his major film.

Dreamy is now caought between her dream and reality.

In Stephen Chow's film 'The New King of Comedy', E Jing Wen stars as Dreamy, an actress wannabe who has spent the last ten years of her life getting occasional (often humiliating) work as an extra in movies, while dreaming of making it big as a movie star. Her parents have lost patience with their daughter's dead-end dream, but Dreamy is a 'never say die' gal who refuses to be deterred.

Dreamy's biggest claim to fame is as a bit player in a WeChat video in which Marco (Wang Bao Qiang), a formerly famous and hopelessly self-infatuated actor is scared into peeing his pants. The video goes viral, and relaunches Marco's career.

Meanwhile, Dreamy's avaricious boyfriend Charlie (Zhang Quan Dan) has his own big dreams of a start-up tech company that needs financing. Dreamy takes a second job to generate additional cash for him. But while she is slaving to help him, she learns that Charlie simply is using her. The disappointment drives her to give up all of her dreams. But someone from her past seeks to encourage her...

'The New King of Comedy' is a film with a big heart and a lot of laughs. E Jing Wen is a revelation, delivering a warm, winning performance. This film is highly recommended for all audiences.
