Ronny Yu (The Bride with White Hair) directs The Phantom Lover, a sumptuous Hong Kong version of Gaston Leroux's classic horror-romance, The Phantom of the Opera. Leslie Cheung is Danping, a charismatic but narcissistic opera singer, whose performance in a Mandarin musical performance of Romeo and Juliet made him the toast of the 1920's Chinese Opera scene. Daiping fell in love with Yuyan (Jacklyn Wu), the daughter of a wealthy family, who returned his affection with ardent devotion. But she was promised to another, and their romance ended tragically when Daiping apparently perished in a fire that also consumed his beloved opera house. The years pass, and a small opera troupe makes plans on staging a production in the opera house's charred remains. But a hooded spectre still haunts the opera house from the shadows...

Ronny Yu's The Phantom Lover is a triumph of unabashed cinema romance. Leslie Cheung and Jacklyn Wu bring affecting emotion and heartbreaking poignancy to their roles, and the cinematography from Oscar-winner Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is lush and dazzling. Song Danping was the most pioneering opera singer in modern China. Though he knew he captivated the hearts of many girls, he loved the pure and lovely Du Yunyan. The young couple was deeply in love with each other. They spent most of their time together boating and going to places. However, Yunyuans father believed that Danping was insincere and did not approve of him. He even forced Yunyan to marry a rich and powerful man. And in order to make Yunyan gave up, the rich man jailed Danping, tortured him, then set fire on the theatre to burn him to death. Yet, never was there anything greater than love. When you held true the belief that your loved one was still alive. you would give all you have unconditionally and waited forever if you have to. No matter how ugly and sick he became, you would still want to see him and have him back...

I loved "Phantom Lover" Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Phantom Lover" is much deeper, much richer, much better than the movie musical version of its inspiration, "The Phantom of the Opera". This is a powerhouse of a romantic drama! The film is beautifully shot and boasts a terrific cast. Wu Chien Lien, in particular, was a revelation to me in this film; she delivers a heartbreakingly moving performance.

This print of the film has not been remastered, but it presents quite a clean image. Unfortunately, for those whose Chinese skills are inadequate, the movie's English subtitles are tiny. This is the only reason I have downgraded this terrific film.

I recommend "The Phantom Lover" very highly for a general audience.

You can't help but think of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. However, it's our beloved Leslie who wrote the music for all the songs in this movie. Was he ever given credit for it.?? They're so moving and covers a good musical range of high/low notes that not everyone can do that. Leslie sang these songs beautifully and I couldn't get it out of my head!! I think Leslie should be awarded posthumously for his talents in writing and singing these songs!!!!!!

A bittersweet romantic story but with a triumphant ending. I wish Leslie had appeared in a little bit more scenes before he was 'banished' to hide behind his robes. I highly recommend this movie. However, being a classic and having won a few awards, I think it should be digitally remastered because I could hardly read the credits and the movie appears to be a little fuzzy . Still a collector's item for true Leslie's fans.

``Bittersweet`` is the most perfect adjective to qualify this movie. It´s not a happy love story, but somewhat a tragedy. Even so, we can feel the immense love of the couple and it really touches our hearts.

Love this film but subtitle is too small Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Romantic film. Especially I love songs in this film, which are very beautiful. The only problem for me was English subtitle is too small to read, it's very hard to understand for those who don't understand Chinese.
