Directed by Li Xiaofeng and Jia Kai, the documentary The Shoeshiner's Journey spends seven years following Old Liu, a Don Quixote-like idealist who drives around China in a battered van adorned in red flags and blasting revolutionary songs of the sixties. Originally a civil servant in Tibet, Old Liu left his home and family over a decade ago, and hit the road to promote his pipe dream of establishing an international communist college. Through following Old Liu's journey, the documentary returns to the history and trauma of the past and reveals the different faces of contemporary China.
