YesAsia Editorial Description
John Woo made the iconic Hong Kong gangster movie A Better Tomorrow in 1986, which famously has its roots in this 1967 black-and-white movie. Written and directed by Lung Kong, the oldie offered the basic story arc and character relations upon which Woo's classic actioner based and expanded. The Story of a Discharged Prisoner (a.k.a. Upright Repenter) stars Patrick Tse as the titular ex-convict hero alongside Shek Kin, Ka Ling, Wong Wai, Sai Gwa Pau, Mak Kei, and Lung Kong himself as an inspector.
Lee Cheuk Hung (Patrick Tse) is fresh out of jail after doing time for 15 years. By then his fiancée Betty has already become the mistress of triad boss One-eye Jack (Shek Kin). Lee doesn't want his younger brother Chi Sum (Wong Wai) to look down upon him, so he decides to keep his release a secret from Chi Sum, and finds accommodation with his friend Ah Hon (Sai Gwa Pau) instead. Jack forces Lee to team up with him again for more criminal jobs, but, determined to clean up his act and stay out of trouble, Lee doesn't yield to his pressure. Jack then turns his attention to Chi Sum and lures him to the dark side instead...

Product Information
Director: Patrick Lung Kong
After fifteen years in prison, Lee Cheuk-hung, a hardened bandit, is released on probation. He is unable to reunite with his fiancee Betty, who has now become the gang leader One-eyed Dragon's mistress. Besides, he does not want to stay with his brother Chi-sum who is likely to despise him. Consequently, he has no shelter. His good friend Ah Hon generously accommodates him at home. So, Cheuk-hung gets to know Ah Hon's neighbour, Uncle Hunchback, who is a beggar and an optimist. They become good companions. Using both hard and soft tactics, One-eyed Dragon urges Cheuk-hung to commit a crime. Cheuk-hung is determined to make a brand new start, so he refuses. Again and again, One-eyed Dragon sends his gangsters to interfere with Cheuk-hung's jobs. While he can find no way out, Uncle Hunchback reminds him of the Hong Kong Association for Rehabilitation. Mak Si-yan, the Director of the Association, responds immediately and looks for a shelter for him. Regarding Cheuk-hung as a die-hard, One-eyed Dragon's gangsters destroy Ah Hon's house. Uncle Hunchback is killed by accident. No sooner has Cheuk-hung moved to the Association residence, than Ah Hon brings Chi-sum to visit his brother. Cheuk-hung goes home with him. After learning from the newspaper that Cheuk-hung was a prisoner, Chi-sum's boss dismisses him and he gets very angry. He goes to the Association to scold Cheuk-hung. One-eyed Dragon takes this opportunity to persuade Chi-sum to rob his boss' company. Betty asks Cheuk-hung to come and stop him. The police arrive. Cheuk-hung tries to protect his brother by surrendering. Si-yan visits Cheuk-hung in prison and encourages him to prepare for a new life in three years.

STORY OF A DISCHARGED PRISONER
It is so good to see this legendary movie at last even in a non-subtitled version. We need to see more Lung Kong movies from this era. Shot in a very good film noir style using locations from 1967 Hong Kong with visual references to the French New Wave, the film is a classic of Ho ng Kong Cinema and needs to be subtitled for a wider audience. The performances were superb and I'm glad to see this copy even with the sound deterioration rather than flying to Hong Kong and seeing the copy in the Hong Kong Film Archives. This is a very good film that needed release after so many years and I hope that others may follow. |

Good Movie, But Bad Sound
Good Movie, But Bad Sound
This is a well directed movie by Lung Kong - very sophisticated for a Cantonese movie made in 1967. Unfortunately, the sound quality is not too good, but I would still recommend it. |
