YesAsia Editorial Description
14 years after My Neighbor the Yamadas, Studio Ghibli co-founder Takahata Isao finally returns with The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Based on one of Japan's oldest folk tales, Kaguya depicts the melancholic story of a little girl from another realm that quickly grows from a baby to a beautiful princess. A poetic story of mortality, the price of beauty and what it means to be human, Kaguya is a handsomely drawn and immensely beautiful animated epic that was eight years in the making.
While working in the woods, a woodcutter finds a beam of light on a bamboo stalk. Within it is a tiny delicate girl so beautiful that the woodcutter assumes that she is a princess of sorts. After taking her home, the little girl immediately transforms into a human baby. As the baby – now named Kaguya - quickly matures, the woodcutter finds gold in other bamboo stalks and uses them to buy his adopted daughter's way into becoming a princess. Growing into a gorgeous princess, Kaguya attracts the attention of many suitors, but she laments her lack of freedom and begins to question the purpose of living a life behind closed doors.

"The Tale of Princess Kaguya" is an instant classic from Studio Ghibli director Takahata Isao. Based upon the ancient folk tale 'The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter', "Kaguya" tells of an elderly bamboo cutter who, one day in a bamboo forest, spots a miraculously fast-growing bamboo shoot, which sprouts a bud. When the bud opens, we see that it contains a tiny princess. The bamboo cutter believes that the gods have given he and his wife this princess to care for and guard. When he holds her in the palms of his hands, she transforms into a human baby, a baby which grows so quickly that the children in the area call her Li'l Bamboo.
She grows up as a normal child, albeit one whose growth far outpaces that of her friends. She develops a childhood crush on Sutemaru, an older boy who looks out for her. Everything changes for Li'l Bamboo, however, when the bamboo cutter encounters another miracle in the forest -- when he chops down one bamboo tree, out pours a fortune in gold nuggets. The bamboo cutter becomes convinced that he is to use this fortune to buy a palatial home in the capitol city and there raise Li'l Bamboo as a real princess, with the new name of Princess Kaguya. Torn from her beloved home in the woods, Kaguya chafes at the constrained circumstances of city life. She must learn to live like a real princess and is no longer free to roam. Soon rumors of her beauty bring a host of suitors all promising to provide for her the rich life she 'deserves' but does not want. She pines for the woods and for Sutemaru, but the bamboo cutter is too caught up in his dreams of a high station for her and for himself to acknowledge her reluctance. Can Kaguya free herself and return to the life in the forest that she loved? Director Takahata's film captivates from start to finish, featuring gorgeous animation, splendid voice acting, a delightful Hisaishi Joe score, and a rich and compelling story. Do not miss this one!!! |
