A village in Protestant northern Germany 1913-1914, on the eve of World War I. The story of the children and teenagers of a choir run by the village schoolteacher, and their families: the baron, the steward, the pastor, the doctor, the midwife, the tenant farmers. Children are constantly punished, both physically and psychologically, for the slightest infraction. The women are similarly brutalized. Then strange accidents occur and gradually take on the character of a punishment ritual.
The gruesome result of the sick values and mistreatments revealed at least partly the fascism that quickly followed in its wake. The children raised in that envirnment were ones being recruited for the World War II, which shook the whole of Eruope.
