YesAsia Editorial Description

The Water Margin (a.k.a. Outlaws of the Marsh) is widely considered to be one of the four great masterworks in all of Chinese literature. Credited to authors Shi Nai An and Luo Guan Zhong, this literary classic centers on the adventures of one hundred and eight larger-than-life characters living in 12th century China. So well-beloved is this legendary work that it has inspired a slew of adaptations, including plays, television shows, comic books, and even video games!

Considering the book's obvious appeal, it's no surprise that the famous Shaw Brothers studio would adapt the novel for the silver screen. In fact, various episodes of the novel were re-imagined for the cinema in no less than seventeen pictures, including such films as The Water Margin, All Men are Brothers, Tiger Killer, and The Amorous Lotus Pan, to name but a few!

Perhaps one of the most intriguing Shaw Brothers adaptations, however, was one of the earliest, Three Sinners, a 1962 film helmed by Yan Jun, director of The Grand Substitution and The Iron Buddha. Based on one particular storyline in the larger work, Three Sinners weaves an intriguing story of romance, treachery, and death, all within the context of the traditional Huangmei Opera. Yan Jun casts his real-life wife, the elegant Li Li Hua, star of such Shaw Brothers films as The Goddess of Mercy and Vermillion Door, as one of the title characters, a woman who finds herself in the middle of a stormy love triangle involving her controlling husband (director Yan Jun serving double duty in a starring role) and a passionate lover (Chen Yan Yan). Fans of The Water Margin won't want to miss out on this classic musical interpretation!

Top-notch Huangmei melodrama Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Three Sinners" is a gem! Virtuous Li Li Hua and her mother (Chen Yan Yan) enter a town and Li pleads for some wealthy man to buy her as his concubine so that her mother can be cared for. The upright Yen Chuan (who also directed the film and was Miss Li's husband in real life) arranged for some money and a good home to be given to Miss Li. Li Li Hua assumes that she now is Yen's concubine, but he never intended such an arrangement; he simply was giving this money to her as a gift of generosity. Nonetheless, Yen soon falls in love with Li and they become inseparable.

Trouble arises when Yen must journey to Jinan on official business. While he is away, Yen's evil student (Yen Sheng Mei), who covets Miss Li's affections, lures Miss Li into a neglected old temple and there forces himself upon her. Shamed by the incident for which she bears no responsibility, Miss Li is wracked with guilt. Yen Chuan hears rumors that Miss Li and his student are having an affair and, upon seeing them together, believes that he has confirmed the erroneous rumors. The consequences prove dire for all three "sinners".

The film is beautifully mounted and shot. All three lead actors, as well as Chen Yan Yan, give excellent performances. While the music in this melodramatic Huangmei opera is not particularly memorable, I enjoyed the fact that it presented a number of different melodies than those we typically hear in Huangmei films. I also greatly enjoyed the more operatic style of acting and movement the performers employ in many of this film's scenes. I highly recommend "Three Sinners" to all Huangmei fans (and also recommend "The Adulteress", the very similarly-themed Huangmei film in which Li Li Hua appeared later that same year).

excellency Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It's simple and beautiful. This type of story plot, would not make it to today's big screen any more. I enjoy watching the old classic movie and enjoy the uncomplicated minded that we human once had. I really enjoy the old Chinese Opera especially the acting; it so dramatic. Lily Hua was very good in the movie especially the last scene because she was well trained from the old opera school. It would be very difficult for a modern actress to play the last scene. It's worth to watch. I give it five stars.

Interestng plot Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
An intereting plot with excellent acting performance from Li Lihua and Chen Yan Yan. Veteran Li Lihua 'emoted' hurt, anger and despair so expressively which a younger and lesser experienced actress would find it hard to emulate. I particularly enjoyed the last opera segment.

An average huang-mei movie! Songs are not well recognised as SB top-notch movie "Love Eterne". Li Li Hwa is definitely fit for the role but a bit "elderly". Plot is interesting but draggy.
