Newly immigrated to Hong Kong, Ho (Ray Liu) joins a triad gang lead by Fat Ball (Kent Cheng) and he is so smart that Fat Ball soon feels threatened. He therefore plots against Ho, but the plan only turns Ho into a cripple. After that, Ho decides to beat Fat Ball at any cost, and he eventually puts him in jail. Bribing the police chief with money from drug dealing, Ho extends his influence to all triad gangs and even the force. Everything seems to be going smoothly until the Hong Kong government establishes the Independent Commission Against Corruption...

Product Information

In 1962, Hou escaped from the despotic terrors in the Mainland China and came to Hong Kong, threw himself into the lap of Boss Kun. After a few bloody fights, Hou gained his credit in the gang. Boss Kun felt threatened so he asked Hou to hijack Boss Gong’s narcotics shipments on the high seas and tiped Gong off later. Hou got survived after Gong’s hunting but is lamed for life. So Hou turned to Kun. He exposed Kun through the newsman he has befriended. Kung was put behind the bars. Hou then became a boss and he planned to wipe out all the other bosses. The tide finally turned to his favor and yet the law cought him. With ICAC was set up in 1973, grafters were panic and started running away. Some old cops were forced to retire early. Because of Hou’s hubris, he eventually got betrayed and turned to be a number, working in the prison carpentry while he is still lame.

Hong Kong has produced a host of terrific gangster movies and "To Be Number One" is among the best of them. Ray Lui stars as Ho, who has immigrated illegally from mainland China determined to carve out a niche for himself in Hong Kong's underworld. Initially rebuffed by gang boss Cool Kwan (Kent Cheng), Ho simply forces his way into Kwan's gang by commandeering the drug trade in a part of Hong Kong that had been beyond Kwan's grasp. As Ho climbs the gangland career ladder, he displays a relentless ruthlessness that makes him both feared and respected. Will his heedless pursuit of boundless ambition cause him to misread the changing times and discount the rise of the ICAC?

This richly atmospheric film is stylishly lensed, crisply edited, and sharply acted by a brilliant ensemble cast. Particularly good are Waise Lee and Tommy Wong, as Ho's lieutenants who grow increasingly troubled by their boss's cruel recklessness. Cecilia Yip also is excellent as Ho's wife, as her association with Ho causes her to devolve from an appealing single mother into a hardened shell of a woman. While the English subtitles in this Joy Sales release are distinctly sub-par, the image quality is surprisingly good. "To Be Number One" is essential viewing for fans of this genre.

This DVD is worth every penny. I would buy this DVD for one famous scene. The scene where Kent Cheng slaps Amy Yip's huge...
