YesAsia Editorial Description
The director of hit television dramas like Love Contract and Marry Me, Hsu Chao Jen now makes his feature film debut with Together, a lighthearted romantic comedy about romances on the streets of Taipei. Together is a study on how the members of one Taipei family deal with commitment and the possibilities of new romances in their lives. The film steers away from the typical melodramatic tone of similar stories, taking a surprisingly light, down-to-earth approach to commitment phobia and infidelity. Together's ensemble cast is led by Kenny Bee (Eagle Shooting Heroes) and Li Lieh (Touch of the Light), two veteran actors who shine here as a married couple who may be on the brink of separation.
Min Min (Li Lieh) runs a juice stall in Taipei's Yongle Market. Her husband Bin (Kenny Bee) runs a small printing business in the neighborhood. Their daughter Hsiao Lan (Gina Lee) is dating a bad boy-type that keeps her out late at night, and their youngest son Hsiao Yang is helping his best friend get a date with a local café girl. One day, neighborhood girl Hsiao Li (Sonia Sui) returns home and announces her engagement to a bookseller. However, Hsiao Li is getting cold feet about the marriage and starts spending time with Bin. Meanwhile, Min Min also finds herself growing closer to Hsiang (Umin Boya), the friendly owner of a dress-making shop in the market.

Terrific performances in slice-of-life film
Terrific performances in slice-of-life film
From the opening minutes of 'Together', it appears that the film will be about a group of bratty teens. But director Hsu Chao Jen, who also cowrote the script, has something more interesting in mind. The film doesn't have a conventional plot; it reveals its loose-limbed narrative through a series of vignettes which, as the film progresses, cohere to reveal a compelling story about different phases of love -- people looking for love, or falling out of love, or misplacing affections, or finding new love.
A family of four lies at the center of the film. Husband Bin (Kenny Bee) runs a print shop and seems like he has lost direction in his life. Wife Min Min (Li Lieh) owns a juice stall and appears to have let her heart turn cold. Daughter Hsiao Lan (Gina Lee) dates bad boys and suffers the consequences, while teen son Hsiao Yang (Huang Shao Yang), whose perspective lies at the film's heart, desperately hopes to find a girlfriend, tries to defend his sister, and seeks to hold the family together. Lovely Hsiao Li (Sonia Sui) returns to the neighborhood to announce her impending marriage, while Hsiang (Umin Boya), who operates the stall next to that of Min Min, tries to bring a smile to her face. These latter two characters prove to be the catalysts for the film's resolution. I don't want to give the ending away, but it struck me as the film's only false note. Suffice it to say that, in real life, this resolution of the story wouldn't have gone nearly as smoothly as it does in the film. Nevertheless, I can highly recommend this engrossing film for its unpretentious honesty right up until its closing moments. |
