YesAsia Editorial Description

An unbeatable lineup of Hong Kong stars headlines Tokyo Raiders, a blockbuster action comedy from director Jingle Ma (Fly Me to Polaris). Tony Leung Chiu Wai stars as Lam, a tough private eye who owns Tokyo with his debonair charisma and surprising fighting skills. Lam is hired by jilted bride Macy (Kelly Chen), who's in Japan tracking her wayward fiance Takashi (Nakamura Toru). Joining them is Yung (Ekin Cheng), a wushu expert masquerading as an interior designer in order to tail Macy for unknown parties. Together, the three run rampant all over Tokyo in an assortment of chases and fight sequences, with thrilling and fun-filled entertainment as their goal!

Tokyo Raiders was released during the 2000 Lunar New Year season, and went on to conquer all comers during Hong Kong's busiest box-office period. Jingle Ma gives the film a light, playful tone that's far from serious and most definitely entertaining. Co-starring Cecilia Cheung and an assortment of pretty Japanese actresses, Tokyo Raiders fits the bill for crowd-pleasing entertainment thanks to its peerless collection of Hong Kong actors, cool Tokyo location, and its surprisingly accomplished action sequences.

Professional Review of "Tokyo Raiders (2000) (Blu-ray) (Remastered Edition) (Hong Kong Version)"

November 28, 2005

This professional review refers to Tokyo Raiders (2000) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
J-pop fans rejoice, finally the music has a movie. As summer-lovin' as a Puffy ditty, as danceable as Ayumi Hamasaki's latest, as tragically hip as a Pizzicato Five project, Tokyo Raiders is fast and breezy as a summer smooch, capturing the gleeful insouciance and urban cool of Japanese pop music and turning it into a Hong Kong action movie.

Dateline: Tokyo. Tony Leung is a prissy private investigator ("I'm a private eye. I'm very flexible and greedy, too.") on the run from a variety of lumbering thugs who ruin his Yahimoto umbrella and break a lot of his glassware, before Li'l Tony uses bone-crushing savoir faire to flee to safety.

Kelly Chen shows up looking for Yuji Takashi, her fiance', who ditched her at the altar. With her is Ekin Cheng, her interior decorator, who's also looking for Yuji, who stiffed him on his bill. They go to Little Tony's apartment and the lumbering thugs spring up out of the woodwork. Ekin's not just good with swagging and drapes, he's also a martial artist, and he uses the goons to put a fine Italian finish on the hardwood floors.

The three hook up and compare notes, deciding that their common enemy is a wheezing, sleazy yakuza, Mr. Ito, and their common goal is to find Yuji. Love grows where my rosemary goes, and soon Ekin and Tony are spending all their time squabbling over Kelly's affections in between the numerous kick fights that pepper this movie. Kelly keeps her eyes on the prize, and soon they're all moving closer and closer to the elusive Yuji.

As one would expect from a Jingle Ma film every frame drips butter, and the plotline's as danceable as a Globe single. Tony is an unexpected delight, a refugee bionic man who looks like he just stepped off a Tsukamoto runway playing Charlie to a gaggle of comely angels (including Cecilia Cheung). He's a live-action Inspector Gadget, only with better shoes and housewares, and the audience is rapidly eating out of the palm of his hand.

A walking, fighting, high-style fashion show, our three fashionistas get to wear a comely array of cozy parkas, cargo jackets, Armani trenchcoats, and wool pants as they fight and frolic all over the Tokyo winterscape. As light and breezy as entertainment gets, and the best of the recent crop of "international" Hong Kong movies coming out recently, it's hard to pass on Tokyo Raiders, especially if you get to keep Little Tony as a pet.

Very disappointing. Very, very disappointing Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I’m completely gobsmacked! On the one hand, I’m kind of a fan of Tony and Cecilia. On the other, let’s just say I’m not exactly the greatest fan of Ekin and Kelly. Again, another movie with an all star cast, in this case, a very attractive (apart from Kelly) all star cast but unfortunately the acting is very shallow (apart from Tony) – how shallow you might ask? It’s pretty bad actually (Ekin? Enough said). The ridiculous and patchy plot didn’t help the films cause either (I kind of started to loose interest 10 minutes into the film) and this pretty much summed up the whole film. On the bright side, the fight scenes in some parts were ok and the music pretty good, very good actually, so I’ll give credit for that. If you’re the type of person who likes these type of hyped up, brainless, put an “all star cast to try and save a film from its poor plot and extract as much cash from the public as possible while you're in the process” type of film then go ahead and join the queue but my recommendation is to stay far, far away.

Atrocious is an understatement! Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
There is no way to describe the quality of this movie except that it gives a whole new definition to the word horrible. The plot is so lame and full of holes that it’s impossibly hard to follow. The acting, except for Tony Leung’s part, is so bad that you can’t even describe it as acting. The fight scenes are totally ruined by poor camera views and annoying slow motions.
This movie is only enjoyable if you have the brain capacity of a three year old.

General Impression Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I really enjoyed this movie. Tony Leung did a great job but Ekin Cheng made a better impression on me. I guess it may have been the character he was playing but it was a nice surprise that he was a private detective. As for the romance, there isn't much of it in this movie. It's only vaguely implied.
