Product Information

"幸"與"不幸",只在乎一念之間,作者透過患有自閉症的兒子,身心體現了這段寶貴的心路歷程。由起初的自怨自艾,到後來感謝上天,她體會到兒子的到來是為她的生命增添色彩,從而學懂生命的意義。

此書行文淺白,感情細膩,適合一般讀者,作者希望藉此令人對自閉症,甚至生命,有多一份了解,多一份體會,多一份感恩。

This book chronicles the experience and spiritual journey of a mother of an autistic child, uncovering the myriad of difficulties that face autistic children and their parents. Told from the perspective of the mother, the book shows how, in fighting for the rights and best possible opportunities for the autistic child, the mother has turned a curse into a blessing.

The book will have resonance for parents of children with autism and other learning difficulties. It demonstrates that however difficult it is to bring up children with special needs, these difficulties are not insurmountable.

The book addresses issues beyond autism and motherhood, such as discrimination, opportunities and participation, purpose in life, etc. Therefore the readership is not confined to parents of autistic children. The book will provide good food for thought for anyone with an interest in people and life in general.

While there are books authored by parents of autistic children, they are mostly published overseas. The majority of these books aim at providing parents with tips on how to parent autistic children. Locally, there are a few books about the experience of parents of children with special needs but they are all written in Chinese.

The book is written in an accessible style and can easily appeal to the general reader.

"This is a personal journey of an unrelenting and loving mother who refused to surrender to fate … I saw myself reflected in many places in this book. I'm sure you will, too."

Dr Fernando Cheung Chiu Hung

"This is ultimately a story of Hong Kong - studying hard, working hard, raising a family with a child with special needs, farewell to the colonial era, emigration, life in a foreign land and eventual return to the motherland. Icy and her son Tony emerge from this background in triumph."

Dr Louis Shih Tai Cho, JP

"… Icy did not allow herself to become a victim of fate. Instead she was able to rise above the difficulties in her life, turn them into a training ground, and witness the growth of her child as well as her own accomplishments as an educator."

Dr Kathy Lee Yuet Sheung

"This is a story about how a life, cursed with the label autism, transformed from a little wild dog into an angel."

Ms Yolanda Wong

"Her book is about a road less traveled, a journey of discovery of what parenthood is and that an autistic child can be a gift from God."

Reverend Sek-wai Lo

A Mother's Love and Testimony Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is not just a narrative of a mother's affection, care and dedication to her physically challenged son, but also a grateful Christian mother who testified to God's mercy and love. It teaches us important life lessons to be brave and strong despite the shadows of darkness in life. In addition, we need to appreciate and accept individual differences with respect in life. As Icy Lee noted, "The purpose of creating people with different abilities is to help us learn to accept individual differences, to get along harmoniously, and to show respect for those who are different from us" (p.134).

We are all endowed with special gifts and life is full of vicissitudes. Despite the ordeals in life, “blessings often come in disguise and that while disappointments may come our way there are also pleasant surprises in life," (p. 140). The book is worth reading for parents, teacher educators, school administrators and people who seek the meaning of life. Readers will ponder over important life issues in the book and relate to Icy Lee’s stories. Highly recommended!

A book of tears and joy Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I enjoyed reading the book very much. It is tocuhing, stimulating and inspiring. When reading the book, I could feel strongly the tremendous love, care and patience Icy has shown to Tony. I could also see how Icy did not let herself succumb to fate. Instead she accepted positivley what had been sent by God with courage and strength.

This is story of tears and joy because it shows us that with determination, bravery and and unbeaten fighting spirit, eventually we will be able to find a ray of hope shining brightly at the end of the dark tunnel. Thanks very much to Icy for sharing her touching story with us. We all should learn from her!

An inspiring book! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This book helps me relearn a lot of things. By going through Tony's story, I kept recalling important things that I have long forgotten.

There were times when I lost confidence in myself and always wished I could be better at this and that, but Tony's story helped me recall what a Brother once said when I was still a secondary school student, "I'm beautiful because I'm unique". Just like Tony, there are visible and invisible challenges that each of us has to overcome, and we should all be grateful for what we already have and being who we are.

This book is not just for parents, but also for youngsters, and anyone who has ever wondered about the meaning of life.
