Based on the Taiping Rebellion in Chinese history, TVB's Twilight of A Nation made in the 1980s follows the rise and fall of the Taiping Kingdom which existed for 13 years from 1843 to 1864. This TV epic stars Ray Lui, Felix Wong, Lau Ching Wan, Sheren Tang, and Teresa Mo who have all earned great reputations in the TV circle or film industry by now. The story starts in a small village. Hong Xiuquan (Ray Lui) forms a "God Worshipping Society" which is subsequently banned by the Qing government. He thus leads some fellow villagers to rebel against the government and establishes the "Taiping Kingdom". Hong marries his younger sister (Chan Man Yee) to Xiao (Lau Ching Wan), one of the founders of the kingdom, but that provokes Yang (Felix Wong) who then plots against Hong. Meanwhile Hong is obsessed with a beautiful girl (Teresa Mo), who turns out to have more ambitious plans than just being the leader's lover...
