YesAsia Editorial Description

High school student Soon Kyu (Lee Joo Seung, Ordinary Days) heads to the mountain with his friends in search of the UFO he saw. On the way there, they meet a girl named Ji Hyun. Three days later, they return from the mountains. Soon Kyu's friends insist they made contact with aliens, but he can't remember a thing because he blacked out from drinking. Meanwhile, Ji Hyun is missing. Soon Kyu decides to go back to the mountain for some answers. Up-and-coming filmmaker Kong Quee Hyun unrolls an odd and absorbing mystery in his indie feature U.F.O., which screened at the 2011 Puchon International Film Festival.

● Synopsis

A cover up plot amongst the trees Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Although a predominant title of “U.F.O.” and suggesting alien abductions, being a youth orientated movie I anticipated a more social type (well anti-social) with an ET fabrication theme. And that's what this is, in fact a quite nasty urban ‘down to earth’ situation concerning four angry school youths and a missing girl. Or the movies theme - Unusual Fantastic Outsiders. So don’t expect ET shenanigans as disgruntled high school students and crackling tree branches in a dark forest are predominant to ‘out there’ stuff. The plot centres around four school lads who claim to have seen a UFO and even abducted by aliens after trekking into a dense forest region, a place popular with UFO sightings. Even returning to their school the boys each show a branded omega burn mark on their bare chests. But teachers berate the boys as liars, covering up a drug and alcohol session at the forest. And mostly insistent of the boy’s whereabouts after a young girl goes missing the same night the lads go alien hunting. But with one lad having a fascination with fabrications (which doesn't help) even boasting of knowing the K-pop Wonder Girls and Hyori Lee, you have to deduce the boys alien abduction story is suspect. But throughout the lads are at constant loggerheads with each other, angered of what each believed they really saw in the nightly forest, through the foggy lens of alcohol, narcotics, flashlights and bs. There are thrown in elements of common talked about conspiracies, reeled off like a listed agenda of supernatural shadows as the hazy lads muse around a forest campfire.

I anticipated I was gonna like this, but the cynical dark ending doesn’t court sympathy with possible ignorance. It’s not about UFOs but an allegory of political, cultural and mental containments, reflecting a ‘something out there parasite’ sucking at human life vitalities in nearly all cultures – certainly ‘abducting’ our childhood dreams of pure freedom. After all who truly wants to endure school life? (The corridors are whispering). Sometimes coping with conflict makes you want to forget, or bring amnesia. Adolescents all tread angst and fearful roads; get drunk, narcotics, and worse. But it’s the culture trap isn’t it? Anyway I can’t overly recommend this having a quite depressing climax (and no aliens come to the rescue either). Don’t get me wrong the young cast are great and the sideways approach is interesting. I just don’t feel many will take to this unusually dark ‘cover up’ plot.
