In One Arm Chivalry Fights Against One Arm Chivalry, writer/director Jin Sheng En (One Armed Swordswoman) elevates Wang Yu's title character to national hero status. The story centers on a secret society that plots to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and resume the Ming monarchy. The organization gains the support of numerous righteous martial clans, but the Qing government has its own plans of squashing the rebellion. The scheming prince of Qing poisons the rebels' central figure, Chi Zi Qiang (Jimmy Wang), and uses the antidote to force him to surrender. Being the hero that he is, Chi would rather cut off one of his own arms to save his life than submit to the prince. He then, single-armedly, defeats all the Manchurian minions...
Dragon Fist (1972)
Not to be confused with the 1979 film starring Jackie Chan, Ting Shan Hsi's 1972 Taiwan film Dragon Fist is a period martial arts actioner revolving around late Qing feminist and revolutionary Qiu Jin, whose heroic exploits were pivotal in bringing about the eventual downfall of the imperial regime in China. Guo Xiao Zhuang plays Qiu Jin, who witnesses the struggles of a homeland divided by foreign powers. Breaking from the restraints of marriage and tradition, she steps up to join the revolution. Shaw Brothers legend Jimmy Wang also appears in the film.
The Brave and The Evil (1971)
Released in 1971 after the success of The Chinese Boxer and The One Armed Boxer, The Brave and the Evil is another kung fu classic from Jimmy Wang Yu's post-Shaw Brothers days. Written and directed by Wang Yu himself, the film sees the action legend doing what he does best - doling out poetic justice old-school style with hard-hitting action scenes and inventive martial arts sequences. Wang stars as the charismatic martial arts master Iron Palm who crosses paths on the road with angry swordswoman Hung (Shang-Kuan Ling Feng, Dragon Inn). She's out to get revenge for her father who was killed by a band of ruthless bandits (Paul Chang Chun, Kenneth Tsang, Sit Hon, and Man Chung San). After their fateful encounter, Iron Palm decides to covertly assist Hung in her quest.
