Dubbed the Zhang Yimou of the Chinese commercial world, director Li Weiran now makes his feature film debut after ten years in the business with Welcome to Shamatown. Using the popular trend of antique appraisal as its hook, Shamatown is a hilarious heist comedy packed with double twists, eccentric characters, and the beautiful desert scenery of Gansu Province. Sun Hong Lei (If You Are the One 2) leads a large cast as a mayor who sets off a large-scale treasure hunt to attract tourists to his small desert town. Welcome to Shamatown also co-stars Lin Chi Ling (Red Cliff) as the mayor's girlfriend and Lee Li Chun (The Terrorizers) as a shady art collector.

Tang (Sun Honglei) is the mayor of Shamatown, and he's determined to make his town a booming tourist attraction. After a set of artifacts he brought to a television antique appraisal show is deemed worthless, he instead bribes a reporter to Shamatown to prove that the artifacts will lead to buried treasure. However, instead of attracting tourists, the plan attracts a group of not-so-pleasant people to descend on the town for the treasure. Before Tang can contain them, the townspeople soon start joining in as well.

In a surreal northwest village in China, a group of smart-aleck villages starts a head-on cat and mouse conflict with a group of international robbers. Ambitious Mayer Tang (played by Sun Honglei), aiming to lead his poor villagers to make money, after several, rounds of fight with robbers, join hands with coquettish Lady Spring (played by Chiling Lin) to set a trap complex and finally excavate the invaluable treasure.
