From So Bad
, Black Eyed Pilseung-produced group STAYC is undoubtedly one of the fastest-rising K-pop rookies of 2021. This time, the STAYC girls continue to unleash their fresh teen energy with their first mini-album Stereotype
, which sold over 110,000 copies in its first week!
Black Eyed Pilseung created yet another hit song for STAYC – "Stereotype" (Track 1)! The girls show their attitude and ask others not to judge them by their looks in the refreshing, synthpop title track: "I know my look may seem pretty or bold. It may look like I've been seducing you. I'm sorry but don't view me with stereotype." Unlike So Bad and ASAP, there isn't an addictive hook in "Stereotype," but the melody of the chorus is catchy and beautiful, especially Si Eun's part.
STAYC goes rather sentimental in the dreamy contemporary R&B I'll Be There (Track 2) that softly sings about being unable to move on from heartbreak. I've always had reservations about some of the members' vocals, but through this album, they've totally shown improvements in the way they sing. Their voices have really grown on me! J's opening to I'll Be There is stunning – her deep and husky timbre sounds so much better when it's not intentionally pressed.
STAYC wishes their partner would take it slow in a relationship in the dynamic tropical house number Slow Down (Track 3). Groovy retro plug Complex (Track 4) describes the stirring feelings of not letting go: "My my my complex, my complex. Because of you, no I can't. I'm still not living well, no more oh... I still can't be happy, no more oh."
In their third release since debut, STAYC gives us more emotional sounds and vocals in Stereotype while not losing their "TEEN-FRESH" identity. With their rising popularity, they really are the stars to a new young culture.
