Almost two years after releasing their debut album, Hong Kong indie girl band WHIZZ delivers again with soft, dreamy and groovy pop band sounds with a retro touch in
We Are Dancing in The Dark.
Unlike their previous record, this second album connects more with relatable stories about our inner souls written in Cantonese by lyricists Cheng Man, Chung Suet and the members. The rhythmical "Incurable…" (Track 1) conveys the struggling thoughts of hiding one's true self, while the lighthearted "Say Anything" (Track 2) carries a sweet love confession. Following the laid-back interlude Private Zone (feat. Meter Mak) (Track 3), WHIZZ shifts to a slightly edgy ambience for "Guilty of Procrastination" (Track 4), featuring a fiery English rap part in the bridge that totally hypes up the mood. They cutely sing "sayonara" to those who wasted their time in One Two Three (Track 5) with English and Japanese lyrics.
WHIZZ captures feelings of a broken heart in the emotional English tune Leave-Taking (feat. Daniel Chu) (Track 6). They continue to give off a sentimental aura in "Stupid Things" (Track 7), which is about learning to let go after experiencing a whirlwind of stupid things in a relationship. They inspire us to follow our feelings and do all we want in their last vocal track "The Most Important Thing" (Track 8): "It's not about some childish games-n-quotes / Why not make mistakes / Experience comes from causing troubles / Not gonna blame 'cause people come and go / Never needed help for any homework."
We Are Dancing In The Dark closes with instrumentals of the album's first five tracks, which are definitely too good to be skipped. Genuine and easy-listening as it is, this sophomore record successfully carves out the band's remarkable style as they deliver the euphonious sound and wholesome notes we all need to vibe whimsically with, rain or shine.
