BEST-SELLING JAPANESE MOVIES
In 2014, not a single Japanese movie made it into the top ten overall sellers; in 2015, there were four. Not only did the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy take the top three spots in Japanese movies, Kyoto Inferno and The Legend Ends also came in first and second overall, the first time a Japanese movie has done so in recent memory. Other live-action manga adaptations like Lupin, Tokyo Tribe and As the Gods Will also sold well, and animation continued to be popular with Stand By Me Doraemon and two Ghibli films in the top ten. Arashi also extended their fandom power to film with the third installment of the Pikanchi series managing to come in eighth even without an English-subtitled release.1. Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno | 2. Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends | 3. Rurouni Kenshin | 4. Stand By Me Doraemon | 5. When Marnie Was There |
6. Lupin the Third | 7. The Tale of Princess Kaguya | 8. PIKANCHI LIFE IS HARD tabun HAPPY | 9 (tie). Tokyo Tribe | 9. (tie). As the Gods Will |
BEST-SELLING CHINESE MOVIES
Wong Fei Hung reboot Rise of the Legend came out on top in the annual action fightfest, beating Donnie Yen's Kung Fu Jungle, Jackie Chan's Dragon Blade, Wu Jing's Wolf Warriors and SPL 2 to become the best-selling Chinese movie of 2015. The finale of The Four trilogy and crime thriller Helios from the directors of Cold War unsurprisingly made the top ten bestsellers as well, but 2015 also saw more entries outside of the genre fare that usually dominates the chart, including remake comedy 20, Once Again, romantic TVB spinoff Triumph in the Skies and Ann Hui's literary biopic The Golden Era.1. Rise of the Legend | 2. Kung Fu Jungle | 3. Dragon Blade | 4. SPL 2 | 5. 20, Once Again |
6. Triumph in the Skies | 7 (tie). Wolf Warriors | 7 (tie). The Four III | 9. Helios | 10. The Golden Era |
BEST-SELLING KOREAN MOVIES
With 2015's biggest trifecta of Korean films – Assassination, Veteran and The Throne – not out on video yet, our best-selling Korean movies chart is a wide open race. Lee Min Ho's gangster saga Gangnam Blues slightly edged out T.O.P's Tazza: The Hidden Card for the top spot, followed by Haemoo starring Park Yoo Chun. Movies featuring Korean Wave stars Son Ye Jin, Jung Woo Sung, Hyun Bin, Kang Dong Won, Song Hye Kyo and Kim Woo Bin fill out the rest of the top ten, along with two fest offerings – queer youth indie Night Flight and A Girl At My Door starring Bae Doo Na – amid the big names.1. Gangnam Blues | 2. Tazza: The Hidden Card | 3. Haemoo | 4. The Pirates | 5. Scarlet Innocence |
6. The Fatal Encounter | 7. My Brilliant Life | 8. Night Flight | 9 (tie). A Girl At My Door | 9 (tie). The Con Artists |
