BEST-SELLING CHINESE MOVIES

The influence of Hong Kong mega boyband MIRROR extends to cinema with the comedy Showbiz Spy, starring member Anson Lo in his film debut, handily coming up as YesAsia's top-selling film of 2022. Both installments of the war epic The Battle at Lake Changjin, directed by the trifecta of Tsui Hark, Dante Lam and Chen Kaige, landed in the top ten. Benny Chan's final film, Raging Fire, which ranked ninth among Chinese films in 2021, rose to the top five in 2022. It's followed by the documentary Kungfu Stuntmen, and other Hong Kong films like G Storm, Time and Drifting. Coming-of-age queer drama Your Name Engraved Herein is the only Taiwan film represented, and Stanley Kwan's 2001 gay classic Lan Yu closes the list with its remastered Blu-ray release.

BEST-SELLING JAPANESE MOVIES

Besides winning many awards in 2022, Hamaguchi Ryusuke's Drive My Car was also our top-selling Japanese film of the year. The film sequel to the hit BL series Cherry Magic! followed closely behind in second place, while the film sequel to What Did You Eat Yesterday? came in ninth. There were four animated works in the top ten: the first Sword Art Online: Progressive movie and Hosoda Mamoru's Belle at #3 and #4, plus returning blockbusters Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train and Your Name. The two Midnight Diner films also returned to the top ten.

BEST-SELLING KOREAN MOVIES

After ranking in the top six for Korean films in 2020 and 2021, the steady-selling police comedy Extreme Job climbed to #1 in 2022, edging out Kore-eda Hirokazu's Broker and the police crime drama The Policeman's Lineage. The top ten covers an impressive range of genres including historical biopic (Lee Joon Ik's The Book of Fish), political thriller (Steel Rain 2), mystery thriller (Recalled), disaster film (Sinkhole), family drama (Three Sisters) and occult thriller (The Cursed: Dead Man's Prey). The 1960 seminal classic The Housemaid came in seventh with its new Blu-ray edition.
