YesAsia Editorial Description
A woman living at rock bottom boxes her way out of her emotional slump in 100 Yen Love, the new film from Unsung Hero director Take Masaharu. Ando Sakura (0.5 mm, Penance) stars as Ichiko, a 32-year-old unemployed slacker who is kicked out of the family home and forced to find work at a 100-yen store to survive. She eventually falls in love with a local boxer (Arai Hirofumi), who treats her with an indifferent, cold attitude. When a shocking event happens to Ichiko, she finally decides to pull herself out of her slump and pick up boxing.
In a stunning transformation, Ando seamlessly adapts into both sides of her character – the out-of-shape slacker and the amateur boxer. One of the most unique Japanese sport films in recent years, the dark comedy also won the top prize in the Japanese Splash section of the 2014 Tokyo International Film Festival.

Brilliant addition to the Sports Drama genre.
Superb drama (with perfectly timed moments of humour), that is also a showcase for the wonderfully talented Ando Sakura. Ando plays Ichiko, a slovenly 32 year-old slacker who does nothing but eat junk food and play video games. After an argument with her sister gets out of hand, Ichiko is thrown out of the house by her mother, who is fed-up with her daughters’ constant fighting. Forced to find a source of income, Ichiko gains employment at a local 100 yen store, and it’s here where she finally meets aspiring boxer Yuji (Arai Hirofumi) face-to-face. The two strike up an odd relationship, but after a shocking incident, she sets her sights on becoming a boxer herself. 100 YEN LOVE could have easily been a predictable sports underdog film, in the mould of ROCKY, but director Take Masaharu (CAFE SEOUL) and writer Adachi Shin (OBON BROTHERS, THE CATCH MAN) cleverly side-step all the usual cliches, making Ichiko’s journey from worthless slob to determined amateur boxer feel completely believable. The shifts in tone from grounded drama to oddball comedy are well-handled, effectively increasing the story's unpredictable nature. The cast are uniformly fine, but Ando is outstanding, convincingly transforming right before our eyes, lifting an excellent film into the realms of greatness. As she’s proven in films such as PETAL DANCE, PENANCE, ASLEEP, HOMELAND, and in particularly 0.5mm, Ando is the real deal, and hopefully 100 YEN LOVE (which played at a number of international film festivals) will see her appreciated and loved by audiences around the world. |
