YesAsia Editorial Description

Humanity and nature becomes one in Glass Garden from Madonna director Shin Su Won. Two years after The Throne, Moon Geun Young returns to the big screen as an unworldly scientist who seeks harmony between humans and the environment in the highly praised film, which won Best Screenplay at the 38th Oporto International Film Festival in Portugal. Premiering at the 2017 Busan International Film Festival, Glass Garden also co-stars Kim Tae Hoon (Gyeongju), Park Ji Soo (Mai Ratima) and Seo Tae Hwa (Jit).

Doctoral student Jae Yeon (Moon Geun Young) is born with a bad leg but her immobility doesn't stop her from exploring the world. The passionate scientist carries out research on photosynthetic blood cells that allow humans to produce oxygen. However, her lover Professor Jung (Seo Tae Hwa) and rival Soo Hee (Park Ji Soo) steal her research to develop an anti-aging cosmetics line. Disappointed and heartbroken, Jae Yeon retreats to her secret cabin in a forest to carry on with her experimentation. Perplexed by his neighbor's sudden disappearance, novelist Ji Hoon (Kim Tae Hoon) tracks her down and discovers her secret glass garden. The budding writer, who gets blacklisted after insulting a famous author, decides to turn Jae Yeon's story into a hit novel to restore his place in the literary scene. However, he fails to anticipate that his crucial decision can lead to terrible consequences for Jae Yeon.

Humanity and nature
Human photosynthesis has recently been a hot topic in science. Rather than discussing the feasibility of this undeveloped technology, Glass Garden director Shin Su Won finds inspiration from the innovative research to look into humanity's deterioration in an unjust society. The magical realism romance casts new light on the relationship between humans and the environment.

In the movie, Jae Yeon (Moon Geun Young, The Throne) puts theory into practice by experimenting with photosynthetic blood cells in hopes that people can one day generate oxygen and energy like plants. Since her research is an unprofitable long-term project, the budding scientist loses funding to rival Soo Hee (Park Ji Soo, Mai Ratima), who steals her idea with the consent of Jae Yeon's lover and supervisor, Professor Jung (Seo Tae Hwa, Jit). Feeling betrayed, Jae Yeon withdraws to a glasshouse in the forest to continue her experimentation. After being blacklisted for insulting a renowned writer, novelist Ji Hoon (Kim Tae Hoon, Gyeongju) moves into Jae Yeon's previous rooftop room and discovers her secret. To restore his reputation, he covertly follows Jae Yeon and turns her story into a hit novel, but that creates a terrible situation for her.

Symbolizing Jae Yeon's pure heart, the transparent glasshouse laboratory is a shelter from the contaminated outside world. However, it fails to protect her secrets and is eventually destroyed by people's intense curiosity. The plights of Jae Yeon and Ji Hoon, who are both abandoned by a money-driven society, convey the sorrow and helplessness of social minorities. Jae Yeon fights for what she believes in and even sacrifices herself to prove that she is right. Meanwhile, to survive in a dog-eat-dog environment, Ji Hoon chooses to give up his principles and betray Jae Yeon in order to write a book that can rocket him to fame.

The idea of human photosynthesis in Glass Garden doesn't just represent people's desire for infinite energy, but it also expresses the wish for harmony between man and nature. Putting a fantasy spin on the bitterly realistic story highlights the conflicts between a cruel world and the green paradise of Jae Yeon, whose unspeakable despair is delicately expressed by Moon Geun Young's quiet yet strong performance.
