YesAsia Editorial Description

In the 1960s, China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera school run by Yu Jim Yuen, was the childhood home and training grounds of many of Hong Kong's future action luminaries, including Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Corey Yuen and Yuen Wah. Directed by Alex Law (An Autumn's Tale), the 1988 Hong Kong classic Painted Faces is based on the true story of Yu Jim Yuen and his famous pupils. The film swept six awards at the 25th Golden Horse Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Stepping into the role of his teacher, Sammo Hung won Best Actor at the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards and the 33rd Asia Pacific Film Festival for his portrayal of the stern Master Yu, who persevered through tough conditions to teach acrobatics, martial arts and opera to the children left in his care. Under Master Yu's strict training, the young members of the Seven Little Fortunes troupe would grow up, take stage and eventually bring their talents to the film industry.

Long before the world discovered Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, thye were members of a children’s Peking opera troupe performing in a Hong Kong amiusement park. Painted Faces is the colorful story of the 1960’s adolescent years of Jackie, Sammo, and other moppets who grew up to transform Hong Kong action cinema. It was a tough existence, undergoing the intensive acrobatic training under Master Yu (played by Sammo Hung). Cheng Pei-pei is radiant as a Cantonese opera star, in a role that is a transition between her days as Shaw Brothers’number one swordswoman and her evil nanny in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Painted Faces swept the 1988 Hong Kong Film Awards and Taiwan Golden Horse ceremonies, variously winning Best Drama, Script, Director, Cinematography, and two Best Actor statues for Sammo Hung.

Where they really friends! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Sammo does a great job I'm sure of portaying is Sifu,
but we don't really know what was is relations with the other children through is years with the Peking Opera House. I got the impression he was forcebly the nanny of the younger ones, since he was one of the older one, given such responsibility at that younger age; that explains why all trough is life he always took care of his brothers. And in the movie we see no relation developping with Jackie, I am not sure they even liked each other, Jackie sounds and acts like a spoil kid, I am surprised Jackie did not critize the movie and the way it made him look, as for Sammo well personnaly I tought he was a helper for his Sifu all his adolescent year. I don't know how much is true fact and what is fiction if any, but they had a though life.
