YesAsia Editorial Description

Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah star as two Ming Dynasty warriors who wake up in modern day Hong Kong in the 1989 action fantasy Iceman Cometh. Their fight started some three hundred years ago when royal guard Fong (Yuen Biao) is ordered to pursue his senior, Sam (Yuen Wah), who is a serial killer and rapist with powerful martial arts skills. The two of them duel it out, but somehow get frozen in ice. A few centuries later, they get unearthed and defrosted in a world completely strange to them. Fortunately for Fong, he is befriended by a hooker (Maggie Cheung) who helps him adapt to his new life. But when Sam is back to his old nasty deeds again, Fong must again try to do what he failed to do before - to bring Sam to justice. Director Clarence Fok (Naked Killer) combines the high concept with comedy elements and brilliant fight sequences pulled off by Yuen Biao's magnificent team of stuntmen, and the result is a film that is often compared to the sci-fi action classic Highlander.

I loved this film! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Wow, Maggie Cheung comedic role was epic. I believe this film would have never been as powerful as it was without her. Also, the end fight with Biao & Wah was nothing less of classic. 6 1/2 [out of 10] for me.

When will he cometh again?? Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
What a gem of a movie. Yuen Biao stands on his own here in a fantastic collaboration with Yuen Wah (who's also from the same opera school). Biao plays a high-ranking imperial guard on a mission to recapture Yuen Wah (a fellow martial arts brother) who has gone on a raping and killing spree, the last involving one of the emperor's favourite concubine. To escape, Yuen Wah used the spinning Reincarnation Wheel but in their struggle, both fell over a cliff and frozen in time.

Fast forward 300yrs, and both men find themselves in Hong Kong. While Biao befriended Maggie Cheung by chance (clueless that she's a prostitute) and somehow became her house-servant in order to gain Hong Kong residency (she bullshit him), Wah continues his sinful ways. After a chance meeting, both men knew they had to put an end to this cat & mouse pursue. Will Biao succeed this time ??

Excellent fighting performance from both Biao (his kicks are legendary) and Yuen Wah who played his part to the tilt with his wicked laugh. I love his transformation and we even get a rare glimpse of his six-pack. Maggie was still new to the cinema world when this movie was made (probably around the time she appeared with Jackie in Police Story 1) but did an excellent job. She looked so radiant. I love it when movie greats agree to do interviews and reminise about the good old days. Yes, Yuen Biao is correct (Gordon Liu also said the same thing in his interview). It's harder to find true all-rounder action performers like him, Jackie, Sammo and a whole string of others from the same era because cgi will eventually overkill.

So, like me, I hope all you martial arts fans continue to buy these great movies because they're getting rare as hen's teeth.!!

Yuen's best Solo Work Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
By Solo Work, i mean, this is the best film he has done independently, without Sammo and Jackie, instead relying on Yuen Wah to play this film's villain.

Yuen Biao plays Fong, an Imperial Guard during the Later stages of China's Ming Dynasty. When his former Imperial Guard Friend Fung San (Yuen Wah) betrays the Emperor by raping one of his concubines, it is up to Fong to Chase him down, and a fight in the Cold and Icy Northern China ensures, which at the end of results in Fung San and Fong falling down a cliff, preserved in Ice.

Fast Forward 345 years to 1989, and Mainland Chinese Scientists have unearthed the two bodies of Fong and Fung San. Seeing it as a Chance to defect, they send the frozen bodies to Hong Kong, where they accidentally defrost, setting loose Fung San and Fong into Colonial Hong Kong, Circa 1989.

In his first night in Hong Kong, Fong is already overwhelmed by his surroundings, as he is chased by "Speeding Metal Dragons' (cars) faced with an imposter Emperor and Eunuch (in a Santa Claus and Angel costume respectively) and forced to drink out of an 'Electric Well' (Toilet) by his new friend and owner, a nightclub girl played by Maggie Cheung.

For what it is, Iceman Cometh is an enjoyable film, even if the whole time travel thing has been done before countless times. Yuen Wah gives a good performance as the film's villain and this film has a special place in my heart as it was the first film in which i really respected Maggie Cheung Man Yuk's ability as an actress. It's too bad that you can't find a decent DVD re-release by a company like Mei Ah or Fortune Star, because i really think this is a sleeper classic that's worth sharing with the world.

Honor over Love I guess Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I'm sure I would have simply fallen in love with this movie if I saw it when it first came out; but it was still enjoyable even though it's characters' fashion sense is so 80s. Yuen Biao/Yuen Wah acrobatics don't disappoint & Maggie Cheung in her type cast of wild youth days is stunning. (gets more beautiful the older she gets) You have to cry for her character in the end but have to understand why Yuen Biao had to do what he did in the end....Cute, sweet...another date movie.
