As one of the only co-ed idol groups in Korea, KARD hit the K-pop world in 2016 with their successful pre-debut trilogy, which included well-known hits like Oh NaNa and Don't Recall. Unfortunately, their official debut release didn't live up to the hype. Due to the lack of promotions, their popularity hasn't been as high as their pre-debut era. Nonetheless, KARD is still one of the most underrated acts in K-pop. Who doesn't love a group with such a unique concept and catchy music? Not to mention the fact that all four members are capable of singing, dancing and rapping. For their recent Red Moon comeback, KARD slays with their trendy and stylish music, live singing, powerful dancing and gorgeous stage outfits – you just can't nitpick anything about them! The concept and songs of the whole album match perfectly with the style of the group.
KARD shines with their signature moombahton EDM and trap music again in the title song Red Moon (Track 2). Produced by the composers of Everglow's Adios, Red Moon shows KARD's one-of-a-kind charisma through powerful, dynamic beats and fierce sounds. As always, So Min and Ji Woo showcase their strong and stable vocals. Though J.Seph and BM's singing vocals aren't as good as the girls', their fearless hitting of high notes give the song a touch of aggressiveness.
Besides co-writing the lyrics of Red Moon, BM has, in general, taken a bigger part in the song production of this album. The rapper wrote lyrics for the side tracks with J.Seph, and co-composed three songs. Intro track Go Baby (Track 1) makes an impact with its "Go baby boy, go baby boy, go!" and "Boy baby girl, go baby girl, go!" hooks along with the rhythmical melody. The group goes fiery in Dumb Litty (Track 5), the dope trap dance track composed by BM and VERSACHOI that was released as a digital single in September last year.
KARD again separates into different units for their unit side tracks. For the very first time, they are separated by genders – the Jeon sisters for Enemy (Track 3) and the Kim brothers for Inferno (Track 4). Though the Kim brothers don't sing or rap in Enemy, they helped pen the lyrics for the sentimental EDM pop rock number. Carrying an addictive melody, Enemy shows the strengths of both girls, highlighting the emotional voice of So Min and the rapping skills of Ji Woo. BM and J.Seph go hard in their self-written Inferno with lyrics about their career, fame, success and attitude. Inferno is pretty short but the rappers' thoughts are fully expressed in the powerful rapping and fiery beats.
The whole Red Moon album is only 15 minutes long, but it's so worth listening to. Their bold style is not just about "girl crush" or "boy crush," and their group concept is so rarely seen in the K-pop industry. Hopefully, KARD's heyday will come very soon.
