While I'd known about Hua Chenyu since the 2013 Super Boy competition, I didn't truly take notice of him until his appearance on Singer 2018. Up until then, I had seen him on some variety shows, and been impressed by his performances here and there when they popped up via YouTube's algorithm, but I didn't actively seek out his music. That all changed when Hua showed up in Week 4 of Singer 2018 with a dramatically electrifying performance of "Wukong," a rebellious rap-rock anthem written in the name of the Monkey King. He finished second on Singer 2018 after delivering one memorable stage after another, all of which I've rewatched too many times. Returning to Singer 2020 this year, he became the program's youngest-ever winner.
Many of the songs that Hua performed on Singer appear on his newest album New World, which carries eight new songs and six older singles, all composed by the singer-songwriter and produced with longtime collaborator Bernard Zhou. Besides "Wukong," the older singles from 2017 and 2018 on Disc 2 include the airy, ambient "Walk As Long As You Can" and "I'm Boring," the playfully arranged "IQ Two Hundred and Fifty," the stripped-down demo "Candle" and the quirky, explosive rock song "Jackdaw Boy," which Hua performed for his first stage of Singer 2020. Of the album's new songs, "Bullfight," "I'm Here," "Split," "God Tree," "Arrival" and "New World" were all performed on Singer 2020.
The rap-rock fusion "Bullfight" (Track 1) initiates you into a New World with a bolt of energy and an unmistakably distinctive journey of sounds. This song simply screams Hua Chenyu, grabbing your eardrums immediately with mesmerizing beats, fast and growly rapping, and singalong calls of "Mer." "Bullfight" uses the image of a matador and bull to reflect on the brutality, battles and endurance of life, and its melody and arrangement capture the dichotomy of wild and majestic. The song keeps transforming in its six-minute-plus running time, and Hua's vocal performance transforms with it. "Bullfight" shifts beautifully into a grand choral section with marching drum sounds past the halfway point, and then reaches its climax by overlapping the singing and rapping, bringing the two personalities of the song together.
For a song with seven personalities, "Split" (Track 5) will have you in awe of the musicality of Hua Chenyu. Like a Buddhist parable in song form, "Split" depicts innocence, cruelty, reason, desire, romance, pessimism and madness. The song magnificently combines elements of children's song, rock, pop, metal, acoustic, traditional Chinese folk music and Buddhist chanting. Hua performs each element differently, using his voice as an instrument to convey the emotions and musical style of each personality.
Multiple songs in New World address the themes of madness and mental health. "Madhouse" (Track 3) begins eerie and ambient, and then turns surprisingly funky and playful in sound as Hua sings of breaking free – "After I escape again, escape the soul's prison / That feeling of being released I know." Like in "Bullfight," a choral section appears near the end that gives the song an uplifting and purifying feeling.
"I'm Here" (Track 2), whose Chinese title literally translates to "I Really Want to Love This World," is written for those struggling with depression. The melancholic yet bright ballad has a light and comforting sound. The song's heartrending lyrics express the pain and hope of those who are hurting while reassuring them that things will get better. My favorite part of the song is at 3:13 after Hua, his voice shaking with emotions, sings "I've thought of leaving / When sunlight loses to shadow / Didn't expect you'd fight to break through it for me." The song then goes silent for a good six seconds, and returns with renewed strength, representing the brighter day after the darkness.
"Conversations with ET" (Track 4) is a moving duet that Hua created together with his fans. The singer turned the content of his conversations with fans into lyrics. For the song's recording, fans are represented by a young girl who sweetly sings resolute words of support and understanding in response to Hua's gentle confessions of sorrow, weakness and fear. "I'm Here," "Madness" and "Conversations with ET" together form the album's "Martian Trilogy," a reference to the singer, his fanbase and all those who have borne the burden of being lonely and different.
Both highly atmospheric and image-laden, "God Tree" (Track 6) and "Arrival" (Track 7) create contrasting stories and sounds that complement each other. The dark and haunting alternative rock "God Tree" calls up doomsday imagery over a chilling, lingering melody. Hua's delivery here is steady yet searing, piercing through the "crash and cold" with powerful vocals and emotions. Coming right after, "Arrival" heals the cold and despair with a peaceful, soothing song of prayer to Mother Earth. The alluring, environmentally themed song about rebirth has a folk melody and mystical undertone that evokes wonder and mystery – like it might show up as background music in a Ghibli forest scene. Finally, the message of renewal is complete with the title song (Track 8) of the album, a lyrical rock number that builds up into a soaring call for a "New World."
That Hua Chenyu has great vocal range and power doesn't need to be said, but there are many singers who sing well. What places him on another level as a musician is the unique tone, bold experimentation, detailed emotional expression, theatrical flair and unfettered musicality he brings to every composition and performance. This is the musical world of Hua Chenyu.
