I've seen this movie at the cinema when first released but didn't put in a review for dvd. Before proceeding, I read quite a number of other viewers' opinions and am glad of similar opinions.
It is true that although the west have embraced this 'epic' of a martial arts movie, it is REALLY NOT that great by Asian standard. Those in the know (count me in) have seen better. Alright, wiring is essential for some gravity defying sequences but the rooftop scenes and tiptoeing on top of the bamboo forest were just a tad too obvious as the actors' feet weren't making contact enough to make it look realistic. Yuen Woo Ping has done his bit for the action choreography and both Cheng Pei Pei (I'm an old fan going back to Golden Swallow) and Zhang ZiYi delivered . Wrong casting of Chow Yun Fatt as he has never been a martial arts actor. Sifu Master Gordon Lui would have been a better choice and who knows, could instigate more fighting scenes. Another reviewer was correct as Michelle and Chow's mandarin were not up to standard, compare to Cheng Pei Pei and Zhang ZiYi (now, that's A1 mandarin). Unless you speak and understand the language, the common western audience will be clueless. The outdoor scenes from the desert to the misty mountains were beautiful. and music score was brilliant. Having said that, it was an achievement for an Asian movie to pick up an Oscar and other awards and in a way, help pave the way for the western audience (perhaps the newer/younger generation especially those studying the language or learning martial arts) to appreciate and enjoy chinese movies. This is also true, in a way, because it's not English dubbed like movies of old (chop socky). It has been some time since something like this hit the market and naturally is a breath of fresh air. Lastly, this movie gave us a new gem in the form of Zhang ZiYi. |

okay, the only reason I'm writing this is because of the bad review under me. I know this movie isn't for everyone but if you don't like it, you don't have to spoil other people's fun... seriosly, if you don't like this movie then do us all a big favor and LEAVE!!! that's done... the movie itself was awesome... even though I'm not intersted into kung-fu, I don't think Chow and Zhang were that awesome, but Michelle sure was! She is such a good actress. Have you noticed that you can see all her emotions in her eyes??? |

Take away the piano-wire and it's good cinematography plus focus on Zhang Ziyi in good fight & suggestive scenes. The story is interesting but not complex enough for an epic it tried to be. The movie could've been longer. The story ended rather abruptly. If you've watched enough kungfu movies from 80's and early 90's, you'll see this movie has the typical Kungfu movie storyline. Storywise, there are many better movies, even for a kungfu movie. This is, a kungfu movie... |

Its not because we are hyprocrites or anything... most Chinese people didnt like it because there have been better stories and more spetacular fights... Even on everyday TV we see better shows... Its not because of the language barrier...MUWAHAHHAHAHA...there are Mandarin versions AND Cantonese versions... its defeinatly not because of whom the director is...Ang Lee HAD done better movies that MANY MANY more chinese people praise about...even this very day the most well known one is A Chinese Oddysey, a rewritten Journey to the West..A TRAGEDY and COMEDY AND A love story and spectacularly weeved into one... even today its viewed as a classic... But I do agree Hidden Dragon is a good movie... just not THAT good... Americans praised it so much is because the high flying action is new to them... this "hing Gun" is so spectacualar to the American crowd... these high flying sequences are introduced to the Chinese crowd for more than 40 years... all these "new" ideas are REPEATILY used in HK/Chinese movies and sereises... Finally the main reason for Hidden Dragon to be not so well recieved in CHina is because: 1)Ang Lee has dont better movies 2)these new ideas arent new at all to the Asian crowd 3)there has been better stories in the past BUT, Hidden Dragon is a good movie...just not THAT good... |

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", a movie that will be forever embedded in our minds forever, as the first Chinese film in the world to win awards at the Academy Awards ceremony. Am I right? I, like many other Chinese all around the earth should be proud of this film's achievements as the most successsful film produced by the Chinese, with the help of Americans. Ang Lee, the actors and the rest of the crew made us extremely proud that we, the Chinese; can finally showcase our unique talents (especially when it comes to flying kung fu films) and to show the world that we too, can produce a film of a Hollywood standard. This film certainly did exceeded my expectations. I believe many other people will agree with me; that China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and other Chinese communities throughout the world, should continue this tradition of excellence started by this film. Other films that are worthy to be mentioned includes: "Full Time Killer"; "Master Q 2001"; "Time and Tide"; "The Mountain of Zu"; and many other films carries the trademark of what defines as a top quality, excellent movie, which deserves the world's attention. I believe that there shall not be any constraints at all when producing a film. The people involved in these movies shall not have to feel afraid in expressing their dedication to the art of film making. I hope there will be more "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"s in the many years to come. May God bless Chinese language films. -Phil. |
