YesAsia Editorial Description

Sammi Cheng delivers a heartrending performance as a grieving mother in the subtle and stirring Hong Kong film Lost Love from first-time director Ka Sing Fung. Sammi won her first Best Actress prize at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, along with Best Original Film Song for the film's theme song "Live a Life."

Mei (Sammi Cheng) and her husband Bun (Alan Chun) lost their son three years ago, and she hasn't been able to come out of grief. Because of financial difficulties and a hope for solace, Mei decides to become a foster parent. She rediscovers the feeling of being a mother while taking care of each child who stays briefly with them. Some cause headaches and some cause heartaches, but she resolutely gives her all to each child. At the same time, she becomes increasingly distant from Bun as their family continues to cope with unresolved pain and loss.

Sammi Cheng's award-winning performance
Sammi Cheng was nominated for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards eight times previously before finally winning the prize this year with her performance in Lost Love. Different from the lovable, quirky romantic heroine roles she's best known for, Sammi Cheng's character Mei in Lost Love is a normal, slightly gloomy woman carrying an unspeakable pain.

When we first meet Mei, she seems like a typically jaded, irritable and resourceful working Hong Konger who takes up foster parenting at least partially for the foster care allowance. We gradually learn that Mei and her husband Bun (Alan Luk) lost their son when he was three-years-old, and she has never really come out of the grief.

Mei's journey as a foster parent is presented in episodic fashion surrounding the different children who enter her life through the years. Just as importantly, she and Bun enter the lives of the children, including a boy in protective custody, a girl whose grandmother is hospitalized, a girl with cleft lip, and siblings whose father is in jail. Becoming a foster mother allows Mei to open her heart to both joy and pain again, as she experiences ups and downs caring for and connecting with the kids whose stays can only be temporary. Trials in foster parenting force her at various points to acknowledge her grief, fears and yearnings, and the effect that her son's death had on her marriage with Bun.

With the stories of the children, Lost Love also shows different aspects of Hong Kong life and society. Even at their young ages, each child is struggling, striving and learning to live, love and trust adults again. The film is notably free of overt tear-grabbing scenes and presents each child's time with Mei in mostly slice-of-life manner – but there are still moments involving the children that may hit you in the feels.

In one of the best performances of her career, Sammi Cheng is subtle and restrained, even during her character's emotional outbursts. Alan Luk is also great in an underrated performance as an understandably flawed man silently dealing with his changing family in his own way. Under the discreet direction and storytelling of first-time director Ka Sing Fung, Lost Love works towards neither closure nor conflict, but rather a realistic and empathetic depiction of living with loss.
