The Light Shines Only There director O Mipo depicts the delicate relationship between deaf parents and hearing children in Living in Two Worlds, her first film in nine years. Based on autobiographical essays by Igarashi Dai, Living in Two Worlds follows the experiences and emotional trajectory of a CODA (child of deaf adult) portrayed by Yoshizawa Ryo. All deaf characters in the film are played by deaf actors, including Oshidari Akiko as the protagonist's mother.

Dai (Yoshizawa Ryo) grew up in a small port town in Miyagi with his loving parents who are deaf and communicate through sign language. From a young age, being an "interpreter" for his mother (Oshidari Akiko) was a normal part of Dai's daily life. He served as an important bridge for communication between his parents and the world of the hearing. However, as Dai grew older, he began to feel irritated by the gazes of other people, and overwhelmed by the burden of being different. At age 20, he leaves his hometown and runs off to Tokyo. Life in the big city is middling until he meets a group of friends who are also deaf like his parents.
